has anyone used a mag-loop for amateur use. how would rate them compare to a vertical.
They're harder to stick in your eye. Beyond that *supremely knowledgeable blink* I really can't help.

For me the answer is no & no. But .....
.... so you're after a current response from a changing magnetic flux ( in turn proportional to a loop's enclosed area en-face to the field ) ?
If so then that assumes a wave polarisation, and in turn a probable direction to source. What do you want to pick up with it ?
At a glance you'd want exceptionally low impedance and a really good current amplifier .....

I will say if you have the ability for a vertical dipole it will throw a better omni-directional signal.
