Hey there...
Let me explain my issue for you..
I'm running BOINC (and S@H Classic, but that's about to stop) on a laptop, Dell Inspiron, which runs Gentoo Linux. I've managed to make X turn the backlight off after a couple of minutes when I'm away from the laptop, but, as you will imagine, X is not very 'cycle-cheap' to run. Is there a way to turn the backlight in console mode only? I know that after some time the console will 'blank', but the backlight in the monitor is still on, which I don't enjoy too much...
Does anyone know if this is even possible?
Thanks in advance...
PS: Console blanking via APM won't help either...
Cheers and happy crunchin'

Sadly, it doesn't do the trick... Backlight stays on.. trust me... I've tried that...

There's usually a special function key you can press to toggle video mode.
you'll see a FN key, in another colour, and a few symbols in another colour.
Pressing the FN key and the key with the monitor symbol on it will likely toggle it on and off.

No it doesn't. I'm not stupid man, c'mon... I've tried it out... Shutting the lid, selecting the CRT video exit.. doesn't work... Not even the Fn + D that works on other Dell laptops...

Have you read the Power Management Guide for Gentoo Linux? Very useful. And near the end it has a link to a kernel bug ACPI (button and lid) not working Dell Inspiron 5150 with 2.6 kernel.
