WU per day

Topic 189669

I aborted a work unit recently because my host was allocated very late, and very shortly after that the third result came in and credit was given. I figured that it was more worth my while to abort the work unit, as it had just started (25% done).

I notice the WU per day number dropped from 8 to 7. This is no problem, I don't download more than 2 per day. I am just wondering, what is policy regarding this? Will the count creep up again? What is the timescale?

I fully understand the need for this mechanism, in fact I am pleasantly surprised to see it. I am just interested to know how it works. I will continue to abort work units in such situations, until the limit reaches 2 per day. Productivity is more important to me than credit, at this point in time. Certainly I don't want it to be changed, though. It is very welcome.

The daily qouta drops by one

The daily qouta drops by one per day for every late, errored or aborted WU. Every successful WU doubles the daily quota. Limits 1 and a project defined max.

A longer winded explanation

A longer winded explanation is in the Wiki with the name daily result quota. Even has a table with the known project values (LHC@Home, to this point has not updated the server side components to show this value.

Thanks, but John's rendition was perfectly clear.

Yes, we are all sure it was for you but there may have been others with similar or somewhat related questions who would like a pointer to more information. Paul has undertaken a mammoth task of documenting the BOINC universe and we all should take every opportunity to point casual readers towards that treasure trove of information.

If we, collectively, could convince people who ask questions here to go search the Wiki first, at least 8 out of every 10 questions asked here would not need to be asked. Every time Paul posts, it's another advert for the Wiki. We should be encouraging him and not chiding him. Did anyone ever chide Mother Theresa for nurturing her flock?

Paul is the "Mother Theresa" of the BOINC flock.

Cheers,
Gary.

Ah, well, I was just wanting to point out that it is clear, but, also incomplete. As Gary pointed out (blushing mode on), we editors (and John is one) tend to write extensive and more complete answers in the Wiki and only providing summary information in message posts.

But, I did not take your answer badly. :)

But, again, Gary is right, I tend to want to encourage looking in the Wiki and if you did not find the answer, to let us know. As an example, a person sent me an e-Mail the other day asking how to set-up the BOINC Daemon Password. It turns out that we DID have the material in the Wiki, but not in a way that made it accessable. I have since corrected that, and I just made two other changes to make that even better. The Wiki is dynamic and constantly changing to provide more and more information, and hopefully in ways that make the total "BOINC Experience" more enjoyable.

Not everybody likes Mother Theresa, you know. That's not a comparison I would make.

I could have looked up the reason in the Wiki, but I would have missed out on voicing my support for that policy. That was the primary aim. It would have been strange to post 'Hey, I really like that policy, the one that says xxxxx' after reading the Wiki.

I have read the Wiki for other information, and it was informative.

Fair enough ... How about this one then.

Paul is the Nelson Mandela of the Boinc flock. Although he suffers from severe personal afflictions that must sap his will to continue, and although he sometimes appears to be fighting against "Authority" for the better welfare of his followers, he nevertheless simply soldiers on regardless and in so doing has kindled a very healthy respect and admiration from all those who observe his sincere efforts.

Cheers,
Gary.

That is definitely a comparison I would not make. I considered explaining why, but a political discussion is probably against policy. Let me just say that he was involved in a train station bombing, and those have become decidedly unpopular of late...

Why even say that if you aren't itching to introduce religious and racist bigotry into otherwise totally innocent comments which were simply intended to compliment the hard work and dedication of PDB? I suppose next you'll tell us Mandela shouldn't have shared a Nobel Peace Prize because he was a terrorist too. And then of course the Jews and Poles in the ghettos of Warsaw were obviously terrorists as well because they had the audacity to use particular tactics in the situation they found themselves in.

Why is it that we can't see good in people who sacrifice their own safety and wellbeing for that of the people they serve?? I detest religious and racist bigotry and see no place for it in the world in general, let alone this message board. I'm out of this thread. No further comment from me.

Cheers,
Gary.
