but it seems my 'pending credit' has gone thru the roof lately for some reason...over 1,500 and still climbing...has anyone else observed an increase in 'lag' ? With so many new clients running faster new hardware, it seems somehow counter-intuitive that the mean turn-around time for an arbitrary work unit would be getting longer instead of shorter.

I'm probably missing something here, or maybe several somethings...

this enquiring mind would like to understand...

I've been between 1,200 and 900 pending credits for the past several weeks. Currently, I'm in the 900's. So I've not seen a sudden increase in pending units.

Mine has shot up and down

Mine has shot up and down between 700 and 1900 three times in the past month. Usually climbs for about 7-10 days then quickly drops over the next 3-4.

When I get a large number pending, I often see that it is the same computer # or #s that are failing/erroring and causing me another 5-7 day delay on nearly half my pending WUs before another computer will finish them off.

One of the "somethings" you are missing is the new machine you added just recently. This has added about 350 to your pending credit. That is a fairly significant fraction of your total pending.

Another factor is the variability of any single machine. If you had 10 times as many boxes, your total would tend to be fairly stable. With previously two and now three you can expect significant variation up and down. You only need one or two "slow" members of each of your validating groups to hold you up and make the pendings grow. On occasion I've seen more than 20 pendings on a single machine when this happens yet other machines are part of "fast" groups which have very few pendings. It's all just the luck of the draw and nothing to worry about.

If you want to be "project and other user" friendly, keep your "connect to network" interval within reasonable bounds (0.1 to 0.5 days is good for broadband) and convince others to do the same. Otherwise you have a bunch of work around, getting stale, and holding others up.

Cheers,
Gary.
