We had a kestrel visit our garden one year - which considering the size of the garden (small) and it's position (concrete jungle) made us feel very special :) although I can't say I heartily approved of what it was up to - eating our resident blackbird's nestlings :/ Their mum was young (and had only moved in after her mum (who I was very fond of and had raised around 11 broods in her time with us) got eaten by next door's cat :(( along with three out of four of her babies :( The father - who had been helping out with food a bit) just abandoned the scene, and after two days spent digging up worms for the poor terrorised scrap left behind in the land of the uneaten - but with little success - she'd flown in like a guardian angel and took over looking after (what was probably her little brother from an obviously later clutch than hers)... so it was so sad to see her first attempt at being a full mum to her own little ones, fail so badly :(( She hasn't made the same mistake since as far as I can tell though :)

Oh yes - he definitely wanted to be free to come and go as he pleased, yes :) and was very pleased to be reunited with the rest of us.

Were you anywhere near a water storage tank in a roof space somewhere in London during what could be described as last night my time, Mike? It's why I'm posting from a laptop with no need (yet) of being plugged into the electricity supply - which when it does - I won't...
And does anyone have any idea how long after your light sockets stop dripping water, it's safe to turn on your mains electricity supply to see what, if anything, is still working?
I'd like to think sometime this year...

I need one or two of those in my area, even the owls are losing right now!!
How big are your squirrels? Are they armed?
They are not small ones, but still squirrel sized, the problem is the tree branches get to be too many and the squirrels can out maneuver the owls because of them. I saw an owl get one the other day though, the squirrel was making an approach towards my deck and was in the grass, he heard or saw the owl, who was behind him, and tried doing the baby rabbit thing of hunkering down, but the owl had it's families meal for the day anyway. No noises or squirming by the squirrel, just the flapping of wings by the owl as it flew away. It was pretty cool to see the efficiency of the owl as it was trying to provide for its own family. Since the owls don't come onto my deck for anything I'm okay with them 'thinning the herd a bit', at one point this Summer the squirrels had taken every single green tomato off my 12 plants!!!

I know what you mean about them taking things. I have had to build galvanized squirrel cages to protect my pineapples once they start to ripen.
