Have you noticed that the number of newly registered hosts in the database made an enormous leap by about 20 000 in less than two days? Where did all those crunchers come from? If all the new machines start working for E@H I'll be more than happy but... it's too good to believe yet. I'm a little sceptical so let's wait and see. :)

Just curious about all those new hosts...

Hello Vladimir Zarkov,

Where did you get that number?
According to BOINCstats the number of hosts is increasing in a normal way.

Probably from our Server

Probably from our Server Status page. However, there are a lot in there which are just "technical" ones, which lost their previously assigned host id or similar.

I remember there was a security program out there which caused arbitrary numbers of such virtual host accounts to be generated, because it was restoring the BOINC directory in a previous state...

This is a weakness of BOINC.

This is a weakness of BOINC. Sometimes a host machine has a problem with its BOINC installation and keeps registering itself over and over again. I usually catch this in a day or so and can stop it, if necessary by changing the users authenticator. I periodically delete these 'phantom' hosts from the database.

One of these days David Anderson and I are going to add something where if a user registers more than 200 hosts, for #201 they have to go to a web page and click a button. And then do that again at 400 hosts, 600 hosts, 800 hosts, etc.

You probably picked up some

You probably picked up some "real" new users as a result of the Melt-down at SETI recently. You got one at least!

I guess this is one of those users you are looking for, Bruce:

Holy smokes! 22,235 hosts

Holy smokes! 22,235 hosts and probably still climbing! I'd say that's a safe bet, Koen.

I made a request on the SETI

Message 14718 in response to message 14717

I made a request on the SETI Q&A Website wishlist for the hosts page to limit the number of lines like the results pages do. I tried that link earlier today and it tied my machine up for hours trying to download, write to disk, and display it. Even when I tried to navigate off of it, it was still locked. I finally had to go to Task Manager and kill the process.

And the worst part is that some of his "computers" have got WU's assigned to them!

I checked my own results and here are a couple:

1628624
1628625

My qualified guess is that the 4.th result will never come in! ;-)

User 22082 still has

User 22082 still has thousands of computers "doing nothing"...

"Bump"!
