Another project for the Boinc-family:

About
Message@Home is currently under development, as is PerlBOINC. Message@Home is PerlBOINC testing project, trying to recover message, encoded with md5 algorithm.

The message is split into parts of 7 symbols of length, and each part is encoded with md5. Message@Home software will try to brute-force the message parts, and to recover the full message.

PerlBOINC is an attempt to implement BOINC system in Perl programming language.

Forgive me, but isn't that kind of dubious? Using "brute force" for decrypting or whatever that is all about?

If you have any idea how to decrypt MD5, show me. I'll be very happy.

And also, the project is just for fun, to play with the BOINC system.

Not really... It's much like Distributed.net. The surest way to decide how secure an encryption method is, is to prove how long it would actually take to break it. :)

From Wikipedia... MD5 was

From Wikipedia...

MD5 was designed by Ronald Rivest in 1991 to replace an earlier hash function, MD4. In 1996, a flaw was found with the design; while it was not a clearly fatal weakness, cryptographers began to recommend using other algorithms, such as SHA-1 (recent claims suggest that SHA-1 was broken, however). In 2004, more serious flaws were discovered making further use of the algorithm for security purposes questionable.

... I don't know how to do it, but it would seem someone does ;)

Yep it is. But as always, expect problems of various kinds with alpha and beta projects ;) And with this project there is and added source of problems as it is also an alpha of a BOINC port (to perl)

Hi there,
Yep...but that's the beauty of science - problem solving. The tweeking, and stuff...and if it crashes well start all over and see what happends.

Cheer's to all
