... But then, who needs my opinion?

I always read what you say :-).

These sorts of decisions will always happen if ordinary people do nothing and say nothing.

It's always the right thing to do to express a rational and well thought out opinion about something that's important to you. Like-minded people may join in and some good may come of it.

You're right. The least I can do is send a fax to my elected officials. It may do no good, but it may.

What matters is that we have no replacement.

Actually there will be a new radio telescope called FAST, similar to Arecibo in design but bigger and better in many respects, just funded from different funding sources.

So if "we" refers to the science community, we will have a replacement.

You changed tenses on me.

I realize that one day "we" will have the SKA and who knows what else.

I did know about FAST but I haven't seen anything that tells me who is going to get to use it. I've seen nothing from Einstein or SETI that indicates we'll be piggybacking on it.

...but then I don't see everything, so I admit I may have just missed it. If so, I apologize for not knowing that someday we'll be allowed to record data there.

I meant that there is nothing to replace Arecibo now.

No reason to apologize at

No reason to apologize at all, if "we" refers to SETI@Home and Einstein@Home, you are right, losing Arecibo might cause a gap in the supply of data. FAST is supposed to complete construction in about a year, and it would not be uncommon that data acquired with the then most sensitive single dish radio telescope will first be looked at by scientists that are closer to the owners and operators of the telescope.

bobatcpu had to shut down

bobatcpu had to shut down data from arecibo seti@home due to 2nd system overload ON computer #2

loading on cpu #2 was exceeded the second time two different power supply,s burned up!!for cpu#2

Due to too many projects Einstein@home ,Ateroids and LHC projects using my cpu.#2 it was shut down for a week to get a new power supply.

I have credit on seti@home from year 1999 TO 2015.computer #1 and computer#2.

At the time of over load 12-10-2015 approx date the data was intense and very fast, cycling from Arecibo and was over heating my processor.
I noted the year 2011 data frame and at the time there was lots of strange data peaks that i had not seen before prior the system shut down there was a flat line in data stream back in 12-10-2011.

I do not have any past picture snippit info on the shut down.
MY cpu was working the power cooling fan to a constant over load prior to the main power supply #2 burn out that caused the cpu to shut down .

Back in 1999 on the same seti@home on a different cpu the same shut down but with the cpu over loaded and it had a fatal destruction and i terminated the use of that computer.

Really ? Never had a

Really ? Never had a computer byte off more than it can process and usually thermal overload occurs only if the system remains maxed out for lengthy periods exceeding cooling capacity... Have been processing SETI since 1999. never a thermal issue over a span of 8 different machines..

Pick your system components and consider water cooled systems..
