Hiya pretty new so sorry if this post is in the wrong place. Never done anything like this before and never ran any computer iv owned for this length of time before. was wondering if anyone could give me some tips to get the best out of my experience in a safe way. My setup is ok i think but better to ask then guess. Im using an i7 4790k with a 212 evo cooler. i disabled boost in my bios as it kept giving me very erratic temps and currently running at 4.0ghz constant 100% use with a voltage of 0.9 and hyper threading enabled my temps reaching max of 63oC and avg 60oC, id like to run as close to 24/7 as possible and would appreciate any input into my settings as im not sure im optimized for E@H thank you :)

WELCOME to Boinc and Einstein!!

Is this a machine you use everyday for other stuff too, ie email web surfing etc, or is this a Boinc only machine that just sits someplace and does nothing but crunch for Boinc?

If you're using liquid

If you're using liquid cooling, you're probably golden... The only times I've really had issues with heat (even with conventional cooling) has been with laptops, all the desktops I've used with BOINC have been able to handle the heat just fine. And, I've ran most of them 24/7 and have not had a CPU go bad... Yes, I've had some other components go out over the years (hard drives, memory, motherboard, power supply) but not specifically a CPU, and with the number of machines I've tended over the years that would be fairly irregular for a casual user.

Here's the specs on your processor:http://ark.intel.com/products/80807/Intel-Core-i7-4790K-Processor-8M-Cache-up-to-4_40-GHz

Having said that, there's not really a hard rule for maximum running temps, so long as you're not getting close to the max package temperature. Since all modern processors have built-in thermal protection that will scale them back/shut them down to keep from overheating, there is an effect of running moderately hot for long periods of time. The fact that you're running 12-15 degrees below Tmax for your CPU should be just fine; my i5 with water cooling stays 15-20 degrees below its Tmax of 72 C.

If you want to keep the heat down further, there is a third-party program called TThrottle that works with BOINC, and scales your computation back to maintain a target max temperature for CPU and GPU. I'm using it on my current laptop not because it gets dangerously close to Tmax, but rather to control the fan noise associated with elevated temperatures.

Anyway, hope that helps... Happy crunching!

hiya mikey thank you for your

hiya mikey thank you for your reply, this is my main machine i use it for abit of everything really nothing very intensive most of the time tho it just plays video on a second 1600/900 screen and alil surfing, iv been turning boinc off when i game on it which isnt much really . . . noderaser thank you running time was my main concern people have mixed views on it so its good to hear from someone who has alot more experience than me just being new think its always better to ask someone :) iv been running pretty much 24/7 for only about a week but my pc is as responsive as its ever been and iv left a temp n voltage monitor open constantly with boinc. thats really confidence building tho to hear im withing good operating parameters for my chip really wasnt sure and appreciate the input, il enjoy crunching abit more now with some knowledge and confidence in my settings :) thanks so much really is appreciated
