With every single radio transmission from the late 19th century onwards radiating outward in space, it's probably a bit late to be concerned about the message(s) we're sending out to the cosmos. The message we should be concerned about, is the one we send if/when we find other intelligent life out there, especially if they come pay us a visit.

I think that it's a bit too late to worry about that too, with all the stuff we have been sending they probably have a pretty good idea of what we are like. Every transmission that comes from a satellite has some part of it that missed the satellite and kept on going, so they could be watching "I love Lucy", "Mickey Mouse" cartoons or even alot of old movies like the spaghetti westerns. Then all the 'religious' movies that have been made, both good and bad, and good grief they may not even talk to us before just putting us out of our own misery!
There is a report that some UK Scientists are studying some 'metallic pellets' that seem to be some kind of 'seed pod' full of DNA etc. IF that's true any aliens could just wipe us out and drop more 'seed pods' and start over! We 'Earthlings' could just be specks in a big petri dish in the sky.
Dr. Eric Korpela of SETI@home has published his opinion in the News message board at SETI@home and is opposite to that of Dr.Seth Shostak of SETI Institute. SETI@home has no relation with SETI Institute and was not invited to take part in the meeting.
Anyway, our radio and TV transmissions are too weak to de detectable ad a distance of a few light years. Only a powerful radar beam from Arecibo, Goldstone and a Russian military radar could reach the nearest stars. theregister.co.uk says that a signal was beamed from a radar in Ukraine in 2008 to the Gliese star system which is 20 light years away but gives no details.

I know if I was asked to vote on it today - I'd probably say - let's do it - but I also know I'm not at my most responsible at the moment :/ and some very good points against doing so have been made. So I'm going to vote - that I absolutely mustn't be allowed to vote on it today :) Okay?
It has got me thinking about what would happen if a signal was received now that was alien in origin though ... and I don't like some of the things I've been thinking. I'll have to come back with what they are and what troubles me once I've got them sorted in my head... oh... *beam at everyone* that will take awhile so don't wait up :)
Please wait here. Further instructions could pile up at any time. Thank you.

Sigh, and here I was all set for a sleepless night.

A couple of 'wrenches' to throw at you...us sending a message, and them receiving it, is a LONG WAY from them landing on the Earth and eating us!! If they can ALREADY get here, I think it's WAY too late to try and hide!! Good grief we are sending messages to Pluto and back, and have been sending them to Mars for over a decade now. Voyager is either close to, or is actually in 'Deep Space' right now, and we STILL talk to it!!

Yeah, I think some folks are trying to close the barn door after the cows have already made their escape. The earth is one big ball of RF radiation. Imagine a superior civilization making it's decision on whether to let us live or not based on our transmissions of "reality" TV.
Everyone load your BB guns. It's gonna get rough...:-)
