Well mt first and only laptop is officially 4 years old (in GPU crunching years)
June 2011 I decided to finally get a laptop just so I had a computer in the livingroom.
So when I ordered it I made sure it had some version of GeForce that would work here ......not all that fast (GeForce 610M) but it has been running and crunching here 24/ 7 for 4 years and still hard at work (also vLHC, Atlas,vLHC-dev at the same time)
Only thing I changed was switching the HD to a SSD back in 2014 which actually helped drop the temp. of the GPU from 83C+ down to an easy 74C in the Summer
And updated it to Windows 10 last year.
It is close to 11 million credits right now.
My actual *Milestone right now is getting my total here up to 300 million and that will be later this year.
I am not ready for my next Milestone 100M.
But I would like to congratulate my friend Der Mann mit der Ledertasche.
Our little battle made you faster and I can't keep up anymore. Go on my friend.
At Magic, my other friend: good to see that you laptop is still crunching. I bought a W530 a year later than you, and for some years it is also crunching 24/7. I am thinking about SSD and Win 10, maybe in winter when I do not need this one so bad for work. The W530 has nearly 20M now :)

Why did installing an SSD drive drop the gpu temps though? Was the gpu really being held up that much by the old hard drive? Or was the old hard drive just contributing heat to the gpu and the new SSD does not?

I liked updating to Windows 10 on 6 of my 7 computers since it was free and did it last year just to get the early start and it worked perfect for me but I mainly use mine for Boinc and this laptop is the only one I use for everything since it is a 8-core with 8GB ram and the first thing you will like about having the SSD is they reboot in seconds instead of waiting and watching.
Why did installing an SSD drive drop the gpu temps though? Was the gpu really being held up that much by the old hard drive? Or was the old hard drive just contributing heat to the gpu and the new SSD does not?
Not really sure why the temp dropped that much other than being a laptop all those parts are packed together with just one small fan inside that isn't anything like our desktops.
Before the SSD I had to have another fan sitting next to it and in the coldest room at night just to keep it running the GPU at 83C
Right now it is running GPU X2 here and 6 cores for CERN and the GPU temp is 72C
In the future I will like using the SSD's in my desktops too just for the fast reboot..........would like to test it just to see if for some reason the GPU card temp. would be lower just from being a solid state hard drive.
I might try another 4GB ram in the laptop to see if 12GB will help since I tend to have the ram up over 90% all the time!

The machines do boot up MUCH faster but I'm not sure anything else benefits from them. I used a clone program that came with the drives I bought and it works great, although Reflect backup has a clone option too that I did use on one pc.

SSD for desktops, once you have one, you'll think HDDs are the new floppy disk!
Not sure if this helps, i log the temperatures reported by two drives in the same case, system SSD is used for crunching about 78 BRP6 tasks / day (over 400 days 7x24 now) the other HDD is mostly idle (starts up a VM occasionally).
From best i can tell (literature mainly i have no way of measuring it) the two devices draw about 2-7W, but the HDD is a 4-5 degrees hotter (it is idle when crunching). From a cold boot the temps start the same.
I put this down to mainly the difference in size (more surface area / volume), and location in the case, so SSD loses heat faster, makes less heat than the idle HDD, and is further from the GPU.
Obstructions to airflow in a case can make a big difference.
Once you start reaching the limit of the cooling, saving a couple of watts can make a temperature difference.
On the memory - what does make a big difference is the number of memory channels for example dual channel to quad channel, this can have a dramatic effect, for certain apps when running multiple tasks - i noticed this on the OAS tasks.

The machines do boot up MUCH faster but I'm not sure anything else benefits from them.
