Myxomatosis is a disease that affects rabbits and is caused by the myxoma virus. It was first observed in Uruguay in laboratory rabbits in the late 19th century. It was introduced into Australia in 1950 in an attempt to control the rabbit population. Affected rabbits develop skin tumors, and in some cases blindness, followed by fatigue and fever; they usually die within 14 days of contracting the disease.
The disease reached the UK in 1953. It was encouraged in the UK as an effective rabbit bio-control measure; this was done by placing sick rabbits in burrows, though this is illegal in the UK. As a result, it is understood that more than 99% of rabbits in the UK were killed by the outbreak. In some cases, hunters would target infected rabbits to mercifully dispatch the animal.

A white rabbit walks into a sandwich bar on a Monday.
The proprietor says "What would you like ?"
White Rabbit : "Ooooh, say a toasted avocado and lettuce sandwich please"
The proprietor nods, prepares the meal. The rabbit pays, eats and leaves.
The next day the rabbit comes in. Again a toasted avocado and lettuce sandwich is selected, prepared and eaten.
Same next day, and the next too.
Friday. The proprietor after taking the order says : "Sorry, we have run out of avocado."
White Rabbit : "Never mind my good man, what else could you offer ?"
Proprietor : "Well, I could do ham and cheese."
White Rabbit : "Fine, one toasted ham and cheese sandwich then. Thanks."
He then pays, eats the meal and leaves.
Saturday Morning. No rabbit. But an ethereal ghost in a White Rabbit shape floats on in instead.
The proprietor is taken aback : "Oh dear. Is that you White Rabbit ? Have you passed on ?"
Ghost of White Rabbit : "Yes it is me. I have died."
Proprietor ( in tears ) : "What happened ? Was it my cooking ?"
Ghost of White Rabbit : "Sort of. It was a case of MixingMyToasties ....."
