These Bizarre Deep-Space Radio Blasts Have Astronomers Baffled

Only a handful of these rapid, millisecond-duration events, known as "fast radio bursts" (FRBs), had been detected previously, all of them by a single instrument — the Parkes Observatory in Australia. As a result, some astronomers have speculated that FRBs have local origins.

Very interesting. What is the relationship between Einstein and the Pulsar ALFA (PALFA) survey? Do they use the same data? Does Einstein contribute to the PALFA work?

Absolutely and to good effect. Some PALFA data streams are allocated to E@H based upon a happy co-incidence of needs vs capabilities. However the E@H searches are multi-cycle affairs ie. detection of longer interval ongoing base rhythmicity and not transients as described in the article.

Having said that Nature is not required to constrain itself to our modelling and of course the same stellar object may produce all sorts of evidence. If you like that is a key point at issue ...

Apparently these discoveries were pre-processed at the telescope and the analysis was done on the ATLAS cluster.

No doubt true, but AFAIK no such work was emitted via E@H to clients ie. AEI @ MPG has other computing assets separate from the E@H workflows. I'm happy to be corrected though ! :-)

( edit ) In fact if one Googles or otherwise searches for the output of any/all the researchers associated with E@H you will find they are a fairly prolific bunch. There are quite alot of skillsets needed to do serious work in the astrophysics paddock. Thus the products of the E@H data pipeline segment have very immediate application in the hard science category, which IMHO contributes to E@H's ongoing attraction ( even if the kudos of the Einstein name did not apply ). I am personally quite intellectually itching to go on the AdLIGO data sets, that being the target state envisioned when I first signed up in '05. :-)
