This has now happened twice on two different machines and I thought someone might want to know.

I had machines doing SETI@Home AP work. That's it. No connection to Einstein at all. I installed the Lunatics' optimized applications and ran without problems.

I then attach to Einstein@Home and on the last machine I got BRP5 work with a "Time Remaining" estimate of 1 second. Several completed with "Computation Error" and I aborted the rest.

Now, of course, I have reached my daily quota so I can't tell if there's anything I can do to fix it.

This is the machine ID: ID: 7328010

The same thing was happening to me on a completely different machine when I tried to attach to Albert.

In case anyone cares:

I wiped-out all vestiges of BOINC, deleted subdirectories, removed the registry entries, renamed the computer, reinstalled BOINC, re-attached to Einstein, received a work unit and the Estimated time showed as 3hrs 50 minutes and the work unit seems to be running normally.

In case anyone still cares;

In case anyone still cares; it looks as though this task is going to take longer than the 3 hour and 50 minute estimate and will error-out with "Time Exceeded" yet again.

The same thing was happening to me on a completely different machine when I tried to attach to Albert.

The only way to get more units is to return valid units, this was implemented in Boinc a while back to stop those host from trashing hundred or even thousands of units and the Servers just reissuing the units time after time after time. Essentially the more bad units you return the fewer unit you get to crunch, but the more good units you then return after that faster you return to the normal amount. The return to normal I believe is a 2 for 1 ratio, ie for every good unit you return your daily quota goes up 2 units.

Oh, I know the way it works. What I cannot explain is why the estimates of the card's power and therefore the time it is going to take are *completely* wrong.

"A little bit wrong" is one thing. "Wrong by a factor of two," is something else. "Wrong by an order of magnitude," might be explained by a misplaced decimal point. "Remaining time 1 second," means something's broken.

Still, you have to understand that personally it doesn't bother me if it takes a week to start crunching correctly. I like to "race" for its own sake, but that's not going to make me panic.

My concern is that "people" will attach to the project, get a bunch of invalid results to start their day, and will detach never to darken the project's door again.

In case anyone still cares; it looks as though this task is going to take longer than the 3 hour and 50 minute estimate and will error-out with "Time Exceeded" yet again.

Are you crunching more than one task concurrently. I think the time estimate is based on a single task and is therefore going to be a significant under-estimate if you are crunching multiple. I see this all the time and the DCF is quickly adjusted to compensate. I don't see any problems with max time exceeded.

How long did the task actually take and did the estimates get adjusted properly?

Cheers,
Gary.

One task, slow card.

6.5 hours (approx) and validated against a 560M that took 4.5 hours

Yes, it does appear the estimates are now 6:21:00
