What do I do to stop crunching for maybe a day or less. Going to have my pc looked at tonight by a friend.

Issues are not with Crunching; that's going fine.

Windows XP is warning to download IE 8 or some other browser. I downloaded IE 8 some time ago and it never worked right. Tried Firefox and couldn't get it to open after it was installed.

Tried Restore and a bunch of stuff I know nothing about and the pc is so screwed up that my grocery site won't let me in using my password.

It all started when I tried to download fertilizer instructions. Said that my Adobe needed updating. So I updated it. It didn't work, said that my Java was messed up, so I folowed instructions to fix my Java and now I can't even find it in "Search."

Whatever you do, never go to Microsoft Mr. Fix-It. I did, and he really screwed me up. Problem is not with pc, some hacking critter must be in there somewhere.

Don't bother trying to help me, it's hopeless. The guy is coming over tonight and I don't know what to do with Seti. I may have him take it apart and clean the inside. The air coming out is always cool so I don't think I have pc problems. Hope not. I love this Windows XP.

Sorry, just need to know what to do with programs onboard - suspend, abort, reset or what?

Need to stop Einstein for a while

If your helping hand is going to try and "clean" the pc by removing unwanted programs, harmful or not, then I don't see any reason to do anything in particular. Maybe exit Boinc before you let him/her loose and remember to tell him/her that Boinc is not unwanted!

If he/she decides that the only option is to reinstall Windows, then make sure he/she saves Boinc's data directory first. The location is displayed in Boinc's event log (open Boinc and press ctrl+shift+E to open it) in the first few messages. Then after Windows is reinstalled copy the saved data directory back to where it was, install Boinc and during the installation on the third screen (I think it's the third) click on advanced and make sure that the path to the data directory is correct. Boinc should then pick up right where your were without you loosing anything but the time Boinc was closed.

If you feel confused about the instructions above ask again or show it to your helping hand and maybe he/she will understand it.

Last option if you really want to start over with a clean slate (already earned credit will of course remain) is to open Boinc and select "No new tasks" for all projects, then abort all work, then report the aborted work to the servers by selecting each project and click "Update".
Then after the computer maintenance is done install Boinc and add all projects back using your account and download new work. The work that was aborted will be sent to someone else to take care of and no real harm is done.

The only thing on this website where I can have any input is this message board. My Boinc Icon is the application. I think the Boinc folks don't trust me with a site I can go and tell them problems. So how do I open Boinc (from the start menu, under Programs, it lists Boinc, but all it has when I click is Grid Republic, which is the desktop icon ...?

When I get this down so that I undersand it, will print out.. thanks Holmis

I put Boinc in Search Help

I put Boinc in Search Help and it came up with 52 files. None is named "event" file...

You may want to read through

You may want to read through http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/The_BOINC_Manager and http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/The_BOINC_Manager.

What you're looking for is the Event Log, available from either simple view or advanced view, by pressing CTRL+SHIFT+E simultaneously (as has already been said by Holmis).

Adding to Ageless advice to

Adding to Ageless advice to read the linked pages. Boinc (the controlling software installed on your computer) has been released under different names, one of them being GridRepublic, to help promote the use of the program and attract volunteers to different projects.

So in this case GridRepublic = Boinc, or at least close enough.

I on the other hand began running Seti@home before the invention of Boinc and then when Boinc was released I upgraded to it and when I got word of Einstein I was hooked! =)

I didn't know Boinc

I didn't know Boinc can/may/is re-badged.

FWIW : So, hypothetically, if there is a difficulty with then what is the solution/inquiry pathway ie. version discovery, bugfixes etc ??

Cheers, Mike.

I don't think you'd want any :-). It's just very plain tap water :-).

Mike is just saying that he wasn't aware that good old basic BOINC and BOINC Manager as we know them have been taken by other organisations and made to look and feel 'different'. Supposedly the product is made 'more attractive' or 'more appealing' or 'friendlier to use', etc, in order to hook more participants. Underneath the glitz, it's still BOINC.

If you use one of these 'rebadged' versions, Mike is alluding to the possibility that it might not be maintained/upgraded in sync with the bog standard BOINC. Also there is a risk that when you report specific 'look and feel' things that you see, others using the bog standard version wont have the faintest idea what you are talking about.

When we talk about basic features of bog standard BOINC - like the event log for example - you wont have the faintest idea of what we are talking about. Surely the Grid Republic version has some sort of messages list or event log but it's probably called something different and hidden away somewhere.

As I see it, you have some things to think about if you want to become more self reliant in your interactions with projects like Einstein. The people who post here are most likely to be most familiar with bog standard BOINC. I, for one, wouldn't have the faintest clue about what the Grid Republic version looks like or what idiosyncrasies it might have.

You are likely to get better support here if you were using bog standard BOINC. I imagine Grid Republic has some sort of website/help forum where you could talk to people about things that were specific to the Grid Republic version. If you intend to always use the Grid Republic version, you should hone your skills there. You will always get help with the science apps here.

Cheers,
Gary.

Thanks Gary! :-) I think

Thanks Gary! :-)

I think this is a worry, but I'm happy to be corrected. I mean I understand why the server side might vary eg. locality scheduling was championed by E@H, but users can happily remain oblivious to that except for very occasional circumstances.

Does this re-badging maybe threaten the common user interface across boinc flavored DC projects ? One could envision future inquiries like those of fadedrose requiring a preface/rigamarole to disclose which paradigm/variant is in use.

Cheers, Mike.

I don't know - I really shouldn't have commented in the first place as I've never ever ever even looked at anything but the standard stuff :-). Commenting from a position of complete ignorance is a pretty stupid thing to do :-).

However, I think that sticking with what the herd is using if you want lots of help is a pretty sound policy.

Cheers,
Gary.
