My question: why is the driver version for CUDA "unknown"?

I'm only guessing, but my understanding is that BOINC tries to discover information about hardware by snooping around in various places in the kernel/drivers where it thinks the information can be gleaned. With the pace of hardware, kernel and driver development, it's probably very hard for even the latest version of BOINC to always know where to look. It's therefore not really surprising that BOINC reports something as "unknown". Fortunately this doesn't seem to hamper the use of the hardware.
