In September, the European Space Agency will begin the formal competition for its second "large" satellite mission, L2. The space-based gravitational-wave observatory eLISA (evolved Laser Interferometer Satellite Antenna) will be one of the contendors. There is a web site where members of the public can register their support for eLISA. This takes just a minute, and is an easy way for you to support future efforts to detect and study gravitational waves and gravitational-wave sources!

glad you asked. The White Paper for the "Gravitational Universe" science theme will be submitted to the European Space Agency (ESA) later this month. It will have a list of scientists supporting the mission, some of them very well known–like Stephen Hawking or Kip Thorne–and other scientists (like myself) which are not that prominent but still think that it is important that eLISA flies. That is the one side.
On the other side, the message is even stronger if the eLISA consortium can show ESA that a space-based gravitational-wave observatory is supported by people from all around the world. Thus, these science enthusiast may sign up as "eLISA friends". By doing so, they show that eLISA sparks their imagination and gets them excited about fundamental research, astronomy, and gravitational waves. I can imagine that White Paper might say something like "This White Paper is also supported by 1485 eLISA friends online." and give a link to the list of supporters. So your "vote" could make a difference.

the eLISA consortium has submitted its White Paper on the "Gravitational Universe" Science Theme and the eLISA mission to the European Space Agency (ESA) at the end of last week.
You can download and read the paper at this page, where you will also find further information on the mission and the LISA pathfinder mission which is due to fly in 2015. LISA Pathfinder will demonstrate the key technologies to be used in eLISA.
You will find your contribution as a supporter of the eLISA White Paper on page 2 of the document. There you'll find a list of the authors, contributors, the most prominent supporters, and a link to the internet page with all supporters, including all of you who signed up.

That's a great reference Ben. In a way, black holes are simple - just mass and spin. Of course there's still quite a lot of science in 'just' that, there being so many permutations. I want to hear one of those EMRI's : whole stars getting swallowed over some hours, with a burp at the end !! :-)
I also note the mention of the LSST, which I never knew of until now. Another cool project.

There is a an excellent depiction of eLISA and ATHENA. I understand that eLISA is a listening device, but what is ATHENA.

Athena (Advanced Telescope for High ENergy Astrophysics) is a telescope of the next generation for x-rays as Chandra or XMM-Newton, the currently very successfuly running missions in space.
X-rays are electromagnetic waves like light, but of much, much shorter wavelenght, about 1/2000. These telescopes have to be placed in space, because x-rays become absorbed by the athmosphere. The focussing element at these very short wavelenth are not lenses or mirrors as for light waves, but mirrors, where the waves become glanced at the surface of the mirror.(I hope my english isn´t too bad.)
