Two new papers about the Einstein@Home radio pulsar search

Two new papers, which describe the Einstein@Home search for radio pulsars and some of the discoveries, have recently been submitted for journal review. If you are interested in learning more, preprints are available from the Cornell University Library Open Access server:

- The Einstein@Home search for radio pulsars and PSR J2007+2722 discovery

- Einstein@Home discovery of 24 pulsars in the Parkes Multi-beam Pulsar Survey

In both cases, the full text of the paper is available from the Download: PDF link on the top right.

Two new papers about the Einstein@Home radio pulsar search

Some older comments to the PSR J2007+2722 discovery paper I collected in this thread. And some older ones about the PMPS paper are here.

Great work!

I have PDF Reader. I am able to Open other PDF's without any problem.
However, I'll check to confirm that I have the most Up-To-Date Version of it: Although it should be, because my PC is set for Auto Updates.

Indeed, it´s a great paper, that descrieb for the first time the whole system. But I´m missing some words about the server "Assimilator". What is its purpose? I read the chapters "BOINC SERVER SIDE" and "BOINC WORKFLOW AND VALIDATION" at minimum three times without getting an answer.
By its name I would suggest it is responsible for the different platforms of the hosts: Linux/Mac-OS/Windows and GPUs AMD/NVIDIA etc. etc.. There most be an instant, that observes continuesly, how much work is done from each of them, so they can produce workunits in forehand for feeding each host instantly with its workunit needed. I believe, this is a somewhat complex work.

Kind reagards and happy crunching

On Einstein@Home the

On Einstein@Home the "assimilator" is pretty trivial and essentially negligible. It just moves the result files from the "upload" directory to the respective directories for "canonical", "valid" and "invalid" results. On other BOINC projects the assimilator actually reads the result files and e.g. writes the contents into a database.

In some sense the assimilator can be seen as the opposite of the workunit generator: The workunit generator takes "scientific" input and turns it into workunits in the "technical" BOINC system, the assimilator takes the "technical" results and transfers these back to the "scientific" area.

I see that Bernd has answered your question. On my side, I'll update the paper, adding a sentence or two about the assimilator for other readers!

Cheers,

The PDF reader I use is Foxit

The PDF reader I use is Foxit Reader, and I like it very much. I have had it installed on my Vista system for at least three years. I find it to be a nice alternative to Adobe.

The version I have had installed on my computer for so long is free. In writing this, I am assuming that it is still a free product, but the web page looks awfully commercial to me these days.

Anyway, if you want to try it out, here is the source: http://www.foxitsoftware.com/Secure_PDF_Reader/

Hope this helps.
