CPU is hot, but has higher maximum?

I have two CPUs running (not counting GPUs) that crunch data almost 24/7.

The first is a Phenom II x4 940. I have a Noctua fan installed and under 100% load for a few days, the temp stabilizes around 51C. I read that the max operating temp for this cpu is 62C So while 51 seems a little high, I'm ok with it.

However, I have another box running the Phenom II x4 B93. I got up in the middle of the night and check it and it was running at 60C! Way too close for comfort. So, I removed the side of the case and put a big box fan blowing directly on the components. The temp dropped and stabilized around 53C. I'm using an aftermarket Gigabyte cooler which has never had a problem keeping temps down in the past.

However, I got the idea that maybe the B93 has a higher operating temp than the 940. Poking around on google, I see different sites that say its max temp is 71C.
If that's the case, I'm actually more in range than the 940 running at 51. I was about to go out today and buy an expensive cooler, but now I don't think I need to.

Thoughts?

edit: well, the b93 system just rebooted. When I went into the error details I saw it was due to temperature. I was not able to see what the temp was. There are no settings on the system to restart or power down on a certain temperature, so it looks like I will be getting a better cooler, and hope that helps. Given that the room it's in is 71F, a box fan blowing directly on it should get it lower than 53C. Yeah, need a better cooler.

Are you checking your video card temps (GPU-Z)

Your CPU temp is ok so if the cards are in the lower 60'sC then you will be fine.

I use the "box fan" cooling here myself blowing across the 3 hosts with cuda's running and the temps are fine and I don't use any special CPU cooling system.

I also run some cuda on my laptop which also runs 24/7 and it just uses a little 4in fan at night and the card stays down in the low 60's C

Yeah the GPU are fine,

Yeah the GPU are fine, running at about 76C which is ok (max for one is 95 and other is 105).

I did get a 212+ Cooler Master unit on there. Now CPU under 100% load never goes above 43C. Big improvement, and it was only $25.
My main box has a Noctua that cost $90 and it runs at 50C under load.

My 660Ti is superclocked and always runs 69C or less and I have thought about getting a CPU cooler since they are cheap but it just never seems to be running hot with the stock fan/heatsink that came with it and it is a cheap-o

I have been running it a couple years here 24/7 (AMD Athlon(tm) II X4 635)

Decided to get the 660Ti and added 8GBram so it is over 12GB and the 750watt PS to update this host.......average time is 44mins X2

I run Einstein cuda X2 and Test4Theory X2 non-stop (sometimes add a LHC task)

Did the same thing on 2 other hosts with a 550Ti 1GB overclocked and then got a 5550Ti 2GB and overclocked it and the 2GB version is about 5mins faster running cuda X2

I didn't put the new PSU's inside the box on any of them just put them on top with the new cables.

I have the superclocked also.

I have the superclocked also. Matter of fact, tomorrow my new build will be here. I'll have the following altogether;

box 1
i7 3770
32gb
660 Ti Superclocked x2

box2
phenom II x4 940
4gb
550 Ti

box 3
phenom II x4 b93
8gb
gtx 260 maxcore

69C on your 660 is pretty epic. It will be interesting to see what temps come up with the i7 running two of them. I did get a full tower case for it and will add fans like crazy.

Interesting that your 550ti with 2gb is 5 mins faster. I'm getting only the 1gb version but went for the cheap as it will go in what is to be box #2 and will be my daughter's computer that will run all night and while she's at school. She doesn't play any graphically intense games but figured I'd throw something in there to be crunching. Knowing what I know now I would have opted for the 2gb version or the gtx 650 but it's already in the mail.

Power consumption isn't a concern for us. We live in a house provided by my wife's work in which the company pays for all the bills. I know it's not very "green" but I am free from considering power consumption when running boxes which is a plus.

I looked on some website somewhere that gave the annual cost for various graphics cards. I seem to remember the 660Ti superclocked running full bore 24/7 is like $320/year!

Yeah I try to pay no

Yeah I try to pay no attention to the power consumption and the light bill but after you said that!!!

I guess I have been spending a lot of money.

Yeah I got my first 550Ti OC just because it was only $99 and the next one with 2GB memory was almost $50 more so I hope it earns it's pay over a year.

You will be running better processors than mine so your 660Ti will be even better......nice thing about the 550 and 660 is we can overclock them ourselves using EVGA's "Precision" that comes on the disc.

Here is the GPU-Z for both of my 550's (I will have to switch over to the other one to get the pic and edit this)

First is the 550Ti 2GB

Well, new build came in.

Well, new build came in. Figured the best way to stress test it was with E@H.

Sure is a beautiful thing!

Very nice dmike!! Those

Very nice dmike!!

Those task times are great and they are quite a bit faster than my 660Ti just because of the processor you have to run along with the GPU's

You will notice it takes a while before it raises your RAC

It has been about 9 days since I added the 2GB 550Ti and it still is not close to the actual RAC yet and I forget how many days it took before my 660Ti RAC was brought all the way up.

It is up to 31,900 now with the AMD AthlonII X4 635

Your 660Ti's will be much higher.

Have fun and watch the card and CPU temps each day just to make sure it is ok.

So far, the tasks on the

So far, the tasks on the 660ti are the same for completion (24-25mins) as they were on a phenom II x4 940 @ 3.0ghz. I am running 3.0 16x now on the ivy bridge. But, so far the results are the same.

I imagine I might see a difference assigning multiple tasks to one unit, which I will try later. But, I will be installing the 550ti in the aforementioned phenom II later tonight and get that one working.

The GPU temps are a little bit warm, one is 77C the other at 75C. I did install a Frio cooler on the i7 (Ivy Bridge is notorious for heat) and it has yet to go above 44C which for that chip I'm happy with. I have a place for a side fan and two on the top of the case along with another front intake fan so I can really make the thing a wind tunnel if need be.

Of course, no new build is ever without any issue for me. Everything is fine except that in playing one of my favorite games, the graphics have a strange blur to them. Neither my wife nor my sister noticed anything, but I'm the type of person that can see a gnat turd on a 50' screen 30 yards away :P

I wanted to add that I have

I wanted to add that I have the 3rd box up and running with the 550Ti. WOW!

The 550Ti is completing projects on average 27-28 minutes each! My 660Ti is 24-25 mins, and my gtx260 is around 40-41 minutes.

That 550Ti REALLY punches its weight and more!

@dmike: Impressive setup, but

@dmike: Impressive setup, but shouldn´t be the runtimes a little bit lower? Running only one workunit on the gpu should give you much lower times. On my i7 2600K (4.6GHz) and GTX470 one wu takes 18 min and 2 wu 32 min. Your 6600ti should be definitly faster.
I´m running 6 cpu tasks and 2 gpu task to not slow down the gpu.
