Hi,

has anyone experiences with the NVIDIA GTX 650 TI for BRP tasks?

I plan to use it on this host:
http://einsteinathome.org/host/5731078

It's currently running a GT 640. 2 tasks are processed in parallel, so average run duration for one task is at about 3600 seconds.

When I've upgraded it from at GT 430, I was quite disappointed with the performance of the GT 640. Of course it's a bit faster and consumes a bit less power, but nothing really outstanding. (Game) benchmarks on various review sites looked good, but for BRP the card's memory bandwidth is really slowing it down.

I've read that the 650 TI has also limited memory bandwidth compared with the 660 that is using the same chip.

How is it for BRP, could an upgrade be worthy or would it be rather disappointing like my upgrade from 430 to 640 ?

Of course, upgrading it to a 660 or better would improve output more significant, but in my opinion the 660 already consumes too much power. I want to cap power consumption to a certain level because of high energy costs.

Not yet, but I've just ordered a Gigabyte GV-N65TOC-1GI which is a 650Ti overclock edition. It was only $132 and I couldn't resist :-).

I have a fairly similar machine cpu-wise with a GTX650 which is completing tasks in pretty much exactly half the time of your 640. On the specs of the 650 Ti, I expect it to be quite a bit faster again - maybe 20% or more if I'm lucky.

Worst case scenario, you should get at least double the performance of the 640, based on my results with a 650. The 650 Ti has double the CUDA cores and is a PCIe3 card so if you were to use a PCIe3 slot and a PCIe3 capable CPU (Ivy Bridge i5 unfortunately) you may get a further boost. There's got to be some benefit from having the extra CUDA cores, I would hope, even without PCIe3.

I suspect the plain 650 may still give the best 'bang for buck' if you look at both capital cost and ongoing running costs. I hope to find that out soon when I get my hands on a 650 Ti. It's a bit hard to imagine that the 650 Ti will even get close to the total full load consumption of only 113 watts of my 650 system. As for a 660, the capital cost has scared me away completely even without considering the much higher power consumption :-).

Cheers,
Gary.

Hi, thx for the detailed

Hi,

thx for the detailed response!

Half of the run duration on a GT 650 sounds promising! This would already meet my expectation for an upgrade. The decision for an upgrade is now taken :)

So I'm really looking forward to your report about the 650 TI, especially how much it would improve run durations at which additional power consumption. Here in Germany prices of these cards are about 30€ different, so that's OK for both cards.

About your "similar host", I think they are built with the same concept in mind: Best compromise between performance and costs. If you are interested, I've recorded a video on youtube about my host some time ago:

Hi, yesterday I got a GTX

Hi,

yesterday I got a GTX 650 TI.

I've recorded a review video about it, containing installation, BRP4 performance, efficiency and comparison to some other nvidia cards I own:

Conclusion: From what I've read it's not a big jump from a 650 to a 650 TI, but nevertheless efficiency is really good. Much better than my last upgrade!

Thanks for sharing

Thanks for sharing this.

I'm going to replace a GTS 450 with a 650Ti (saves some power, you need some excuse anyway ;-) ).

I wonder whether they design heat sinks more for aesthetic reasons than required heat transfer these days, tho...
