I have a server (linux) at work, which should only be doing E@H at night. However, when I run boinc (even with the -update_prefs option) it uses my home prefs. In the copmuter-page I have specified that it should use work-prefs. Does it take some time for the system to update this, or am I doing something wrong?

do you run the old 4.19? It was not implemented in it, so best solution would be simply update to the current stable 4.25.
If you want to stay with the 4.19:

Here is a manual solution. Exit out of BOINC. Edit your client_state.xml file. Search for the host_venue tag set. If your file was like mine, there was no host_venue tagset. In that case add the following line

just before the last line which should be
Once you have saved the changes, restart BOINC and you will see it now uses the alternate prefs. This change will remain even after your projects contact the server.
