Hubble Telescope Contest Challenges Public to Find Celestial Treasures.

It will take some reading, and there are two different challenges, 1 you sift thru data stuff and 1 with actual image processing with real actual raw data. And you can download some cool imaging software. Give it a shot!

Looks like a really cool thing to be involved in ! Even if you don't get a prize it would be worth the interest and learning. :-)
Cheers, Mike.

Hi!
Here is an interesting report summarizing last year's similar "hidden treassurs" contest for ESO (European Southern Observatory).

Winning pictures can be seen here:

Processing professional astronomical imaging data isn't trivial (larger telescopes use a monsaic of CCDs and not a single on, there are separate images for different filters, calibration images,.....), so just around 100 participants sent in their entries.

…also, this time you can "only" win an iPad/iPod. The ESO Hidden Treasure competition 1st prize was a trip to the VLT in Chile. I'd personally prefer the latter over a piece of hardware. Unfortunately, there's no way to get a trip to the Hubble space telescope…
I played around with two Hubble images and tried processing them in "FITS Liberator". It works, but the result don't really look awesome. Bikeman is right, it is sort of hard to get something that's nice on the eye. On the other hand this competion is a nice incentive to play with some real Hubble raw data.
Cheers,

I have been messing around with FITS liberator app. and its cool! All freaking kinds of adjustments and spectrums! You can save as a TIFF, which most photo editing apps will open, if not, free converters are out there, so you can make some cool looking pics.
