Indeed not everything will please everyone - however being 'reasonable' pleases most eh? I mean i want to help the project of course, 'help' being the operative word, and the people with PCs that can help is therefore severely restricted due to the very long processing time required for a single project
Of course the way E@H sets the deadlines restricts their volunteer community. They understand that, and still set the deadlines that way.
The point is, if you insist on a project doing things your way in order to allow you to offer help, you are a bit like the boy scout who takes the little old lady across the road when she did not want to cross.
E@H have set their deadlines, wu sizes, and so on, as a way of defining what will be helpful to them and what will not be helpful to them.
I am in the same postion with ClimatePrediction - I'd love to be running their project but at present both my machines are slower than their recommended minimum speed. So instead I am offering my machines where they *are* wanted: here till O@H comes online, and then I will try running E@H as my secondary project for a while. If I then start missing E@H deadlines I will drop E@H - but without any bad feeling on my part, nor I am sure on theirs.
You will have to make the same sort of choice. If you want to support E@H you will have to do less on some of your other projects, and the suggestion to use a later BOINC client is a good one because by the time the later clients were written the developers knew about some of E@H's little quirks.
Alternatively, if you don't want to let go of some of your other projects you will have to wave goodbye to gravity ;-)
Your choice, and total respect to you whichever way you choose.
Well said :)
I wasn't expecting things to change, far from it - i wanted a reason for it - which it seems is given in the quote above...
I was just severely dissappointed that a form of elitism / snobbery exists in open projects... i use my PC for work and play - so i can't leave it on for 5-6 hrs just crunching einstein :/
a lil analogy - a good football game allows even disabled johny with his 1 leg and arm to play in goals - the purpose of the game being fun!
the purpose of this project being to enable people to help - or only certain people it would now seem :/
I'm just sorely dissappointed that a project which asks for help - then refuses some :p
Just got a packet from ProteinPredictor will take me approx. 1.23 hrs and 1 week deadline - thats entirely reasonable - and facilitates a large user base - as opposed to being a more restrictive format like erm *pull a name out of the air* :p
Einstein = 1wk deadline + (5 X required time) = BIG CHEEK :p
P.S. I don't like arguing i like the relevant truth :)

Again, the most recent versions of BOINC will do a much better job of copint with a set of projects that individually can be run, but will overload a computer if all run together. It does this by not attempting to run all of the projects at the same time.
If my memory serves me correctly you posted something some weeks ago about that the 4.4x client have a limit for how many projects at a time it will hold WU's in the cache from. I think you wrote that the default setting was 5. I just cant find your post about it. Could you remind me of how to change the setting to something else. If i set this limit to 1 I think this would solve my problem, and let me crunch one WU from one project at the time. I also think that you wrote something about this setting would create problems then the client would have to switch project to meet resource share. But i think i will try it out anyway.
Then you're really interested in a subject, there is no way to avoid it. You have to read the Manual.
pedanticism is never appealing... GHz is irrelevant as you have shown - the fact is that it takes an average of 5-6hrs per packet - most quote around 30hrs
I wasn't being pedantic... You said you had a 3GHz AMD. I said I wasn't aware they were out yet, and since you had your computers hidden, I asked what the CPU was. That would be considered a little concept known as 'interest'. Then you responded with the "educate the uneducated" comment. So you should probably take a look at who started with the unappealing behavior...
I was not saying they were slow, simply that they didn't have 3GHz clock speeds as you suggested in quite a rude manner. I happen to own an FX-53, (2.4GHz) and it's very fast.

That limit has (unfortunately in my opinion) been removed from 4.45. I would rather have seen it in the settings UI.
My bad... i hope :p i was running 4.25 (thought this was the latest)- ile update soon :)
p.s. I hope you will all accept my apology for being so obtuse, perhaps argumentative in my earlier posts, and i therefore thank you all for your time.

I am forever fascinated by the people who try to put the square peg into the round hole, and blame their failure to do so on the hole.....
