Looking at some results I noticed the 5 times speed increase with a GTX480, compaired to the GTX470.
The GTX470.Upper GPU.
Maybe the CPU speed and memory, have a big impact too and the latter run WIN XP64, the other WIN XP x86.
The WIN 64 also has 4GiG RAM, the x86 one 2GiG.
And GTX480 @ 1.5GHz, GTX470 @ 1.21GHz..

Looks like I can answer this myself, after checking with GPUz 0.51, the 470 runs
@ an PCI-E x16 @1x, the 480 at PCI-Ex16 @ 16x.
1x is too slow but an 8x bus would be fast enough for a 480 or 470, IMHO.
GPU useage is 80-90% on the 470 and 70-85% on the 480, MemCntrLoad is 5-10% @470
10-15% at 480.
When running SETI 0.4AR MB WU, 3 together, the GTX480 (1.5GHz),
GPU usage is 99% and MemCntrLoad ~45% , temp goes up to 85oC, otherwise ~70oC.

Being out of editting time, 1 hour, the GPU times are
obtained running SETI@home MB (0.4AR), 3 at the 480 and 2 on
the 470, that is GPU usage and MemCntrLoad.
With Einstein Binary Radio Pulsar Search v1.07 (BRP3cuda32),
GPU Load is 20-28% on 480 and 16-25% on the 470.
Shader 1510MHz, GPU-Core 755MHz for 480 and Shader 1210MHz, GPU-Core
605MHz, for the 470.
(Missed the switch between Einstein, SETI and GPUgrid)
So I could run 2 at a time, memory amount is sufficient, 1536 MByte
on 480 and 12xxMByte on the 470.

For optimal performance, you want to run those cards in a 16x slot that runs at 16x. I measured a 30% performance loss by moving a GPU to an 8x slot.

My pair of GTX 460's took 2 hours to process four WU using 2 off 8X PCI-E slots.
Now I've upgraded to a P6T6 WS with 3 off 16x PCI-E slots I can process 4 WU in 66 minutes.
So double the speed almost, although the brand new cpu is "idling" at the moment...

Still having trouble with an ASUS P5E Mobo and a GTX470, infact all 400 series NVIDIA cards, it run the 1st card in 1x and the 2nd in 2x mode PCI-E(1.0), instead
of 2x PCIE 8x
With (different!) ATI cards it has no problem (EAH5770 &5870) and runs them both in 16x, PCIE version 2.0.
With 1 GTX480 card in (each) mobo, the WIN XP64 flavor runs OK, the other on WIN XP x86 the GTX470 just hangs the system, from time to time?!
Another mobo is the only solution, IMHO

Since it is an Asus have you checked about getting a newer Bios and see if that helps? Asus boards have an easy way to upgrade the Bios is why I ask. I personally like using Asus mb's when I build my own pc's, but free is free so often I use what I am given.
