First Linux system, PLEASE HELP

I have installed my first linux (fedora) system on one of my PC's as an experiment to break out of the Microsoft box. I am very experienced at windows but this project is killing me. Looks like windows, feels like windows, but it aint windows. Tried installing the boinc 6.10.58 for linux x86 found on einstien (boinc.berkeley.edu) and the installer says it doesn't recognize the character encoding. I don't recognize all the new terms that linux keeps throwing at me as a Windows user never see's this stuff. I know I must be doing something wrong, and Linux users would probably be laughing at this, but I need help!
Just learning to navigate Linux is like learning computers all over again and I've been doing this since DOS.

I simply download the BOINC client in my home directory and type sh *.sh. Then I start the BOINC manager and attach to the projects I want. All very simple.

never heard that before. As said by tullio never had any problems running the shell-scripts.
Can you explain in more detail (or better post a screenshot) what you have done?

Thank you - I didn't understand half of what (or less) the system just did after following instructions, but at least now I have the familar Boinc Manager running.
I'll configure my settings later today and hopefully start crunching this pc with the others by this evening.

Don't worry. We all were where you are. I just about cried the first time I had to drop down to a shell, I was so scared of it.
If you run into snags, just post. I'm a Fedora veteran who is trembling in her linux boots at the thought of converting to a Debian based distro.
BTW: I think Fedora *is* a good choice. *buntu people argue it's not as user friendly for the newbies. Bah. It's fine.
And remember, if you ever want to try something different, most distros offer a Live CD that you can download and burn, pop in, and see if you like it. That's kind of how I settled on Fedora.

I did start with a live cd burn, and was impressed with it. This was installed on the slowest machine I have as an experiment to see if I could crunch BOINC faster NOT using windows. I just sent my first WU back from the Linux and after a few weeks I'll see how it compares to the other windows machines. I like restoring old machines and networking but until I found Boinc it was pointless to have all the idle machines. A machine idle 24/7 crunches good and steady.

I'm glad you like Linux. I love have the freedom to do whatever I want with my machine within the limits of my knowledge. Pretty soon, we'll have you compiling your own core client and writing scripts to run nightly build tests just for fun.
If you want to learn more, my brother got me this book and I've gotten a ton out of it.

Once I bought a Unifix distro

Once I bought a Unifix distro with two good books by Stefan Strobel and others but Unifix does not exist any more. I have used 4 Linux distros but now I am using SuSE 11.1 and also Scientific Linux as a guest OS via VirtualBox for a project sponsored by CERN. But it is RedHat plus some scientific programs such as Pythia, written in FORTRAN.
