My friend rembrecron, told me in PrimeGrid a system of medals is implemented in order to promote the participation... and I think this system is a very good method for increasing the participation in e@h, because our particupation is 5%=100.000 of total computers 1,983,072...

The system could be...

More than 100.000 credits= Bronze Medal

More than 200.000 credits= Silver Medal

More than 500.000 credits= Gold Medal

More than 1.000.000 credits= Titanium Medal

More than 5.000.000 credits= Ruby medal

More than 10.000.000 credits= Diamont medal

More than 20.000.000 credits= Paladio medal

More than 50.000.000 credits= Platinium medal

More than 70.000.000 credits= einstein@home medal of honor

And diferents subprojects can have their own medals...

Silver medal of S5GC1HF

Diamont medal of BRP3

Another idea is, make challenges, for example:

3 Febrary at 18:00 (GMT) Start S5GC1HF challenge and will ended at 8 Febrary at 18:00 (GMT).

I´m sure that with this systems will help to stimulate the participation...

I hope that you liked it, I only pretend help...

Thanks for your attention, Jonatan

I noticed this too. I think, because they have a number of sub-projects, they give little tags for achievement in each one. It might work here, but I am not sure if E@H would want to give separate tags for ABPS, BRPS3, S5GC1HF, etc. (which might be time-limited), or if it makes more sense to give acknowledgement for overall contribution. Then again, there is the regular points system already.

I think that could be a interesting idea, and may be an incentive the computing in E@H, it´s a new system... As E@H has less subproject that primegrid, also their database of medals will be less than primegrid, therefore would be easier to prove this new system...

On the other hand, this system of credits it´s simply to keep a count of total credits, the system of medals would be an extra motivation...

We have to try it because we can´t allow lose more participation...

Please don't think I'm trying to throw cold water on your suggestions - far from it. I'm all in favour of anything that attracts (and, more importantly, retains) new participants and their hosts.

I just wanted to correct your statement that the participation rate is only 5%. There are several factors that you're probably overlooking.

Firstly, the big in-house clusters that the project uses (like Atlas) will quite often move back and forth between E@H work and other (non-BOINC) projects. My understanding is that the hostID for each node is mostly not retained and a new identity is issued each time there is a return to BOINC. That would quickly inflate the total hosts figure you mention.

Secondly, for many long term participants (like myself), hosts are replaced or upgraded from time to time and unless special steps are taken, this can easily result in the retirement of older hostIDs and the issuing of new ones for the upgraded hosts.

Thirdly, many participants have breaks in their contributions and don't always take steps to retain the hostID when they return. Also how many hardware failures have there been that have required the reinstallation of the OS? Those would be automatic new hostIDs unless special steps were taken.

In my own case, I actually (now I know how to do it) take great pleasure in making sure a new host of mine always reuses one of my (many) early hostIDs from some long defunct machines I had back in the early days of the project. As an example, take a look at hostID 60282 which used to be a 2004 Athlon XP 2400+ (first added back in March 2005) and is now an Intel E6500 wolfdale dual core that I brought on line around a year or so ago. When it was an Athlon XP it had accumulated something like 200K in credit over a number of years. It was retired due to motherboard failure (swollen caps) and I had got sick of repairing these so it was never returned to crunching. At some later stage when I was setting up some new hosts, I decided to reuse that particular hostID. It's relatively easy to do and it just requires a template state file (client_state.xml) with a couple of key bits of information so that the BOINC installation can be told to use the existing hostID rather than allowing a new one to be automatically allocated.

It's a bit of messing around but it looks good to have a current machine with such an old hostID :-).

Cheers,
Gary.

I have a triple-boot-system on my computer that I bought in 2007. After upgrading from vista32 to vista64 and two complete reinstallations of the OSs this computer probably has over 10 hostIDs but is only one physical computer.

Hello No,no, hehe

Hello

No,no, hehe :)

They are talking that the medals would put on the user account id of Einstein@home, not on the IDhost... so they do in primegrid... For example:

I have IDuser of E@H: 506411

And my Computer ID: 2921327

The medals would put on this ID: 506411

You can have many hosts in your acount...

Do you know?

Greetings David

Due to technical reasons E@H

Due to technical reasons E@H has quite a large host table ("total computers"), because many hosts (about 9/10th) have only been created to finish a small amount of tasks, e.g. for burn-in tests of large computing clusters. I wouldn't count participation based on host stats.

According to BOINCStats the user activity is 15.2%, which is still more than the 14.4% average over all BOINC projects.

Are these medals in PrimeGrid the same as the badges in World Community Grid?

Where do these medals show up? Attached in the user profile & forum posts? I don't know how many do silently read the forums, but only 6037 different users (slightly more than 1%) have actually posted there yet.

I'm not opposed to the idea of these medals, I'm just trying to find out the effort required for implementing this and whether it could be spent more efficiently.

Yes Bernd, in prime wrid

Yes Bernd, in prime wrid could put medals in user account and forum, yes...You can you can be in several projects and you will have many medals of diferents projects...

It´s only add the name of the medals and scores in database of users profiles...

I think that could be interesting, and may stimulate the participation...

At least at WCG and Primegrid

At least at WCG and Primegrid the medals/badges make sense, as there, there are a lot of science applications/sub-projects to choose from. Does it have merit to do such a system on a project that has two science applications, one of which is constantly changing (GC)?

I think that is the question. If it is easy to implement, it might be a fun idea. People like stars and badges and, as said by someone, "Men will die for points."

However, if it is complex, you and the other developers have more vital things to work on!
