No work sent. Reached daily quota

I did a complete un-install

I did a complete un-install and then tried to track down and delete any orphan files and directories before re-installing from the Ubuntu repository. I then went through and changed the permissions from root to user with the group being boinc unless the installation set a different one (e.g., boinc-client).

Still pretty much the same situation; Cosmology and MilkyWay both run with no problems but no luck with Einstein.

HOWEVER, this time I appear to have a different error which is hopefully more amenable to solution.

Einstein downloaded a large number of WU's which my machine appeared to successfully handle, however the the upload of the all of the results failed with the following message:

Computation for task [long alphanumeric] finished
Output file for task [as above] absent

After that it was all the usual "reached daily quota" messages and being dropped into the black hole of "communication deferred for 8 hrs."

I think if I can just get this output file issue solved, I should be ok since all of the other messages seem to stem from that problem.

Could anyone give me some guidance on how to solve this problem?

Thanks for any help that you can provide.

In your first message you mentioned using a 64 bit linux. I'm guessing you also have a 64 bit BOINC version.

The E@H apps are 32 bit. There's no problem running them on 64 bit systems as long as you have the 32 bit compatibility libs installed. You might like to review this page, particularly near the bottom where the 64 bit considerations are discussed.

I don't know that this is your problem but since all your tasks errored out almost immediately, it's a pretty good candidate. The 'computation finished ... output file absent' message just means what it says. BOINC started each task by calling the science app. The science app terminated immediately without producing any output file. BOINC is simply reporting these events. As a result of all the failed tasks, your cache will be back to just one per CPU per day and you will have to wait until midnight UTC before you can get a new day's quota. As soon as you start producing good results your quota will return to normal quite quickly.

Cheers,
Gary.

Gary, Thanks for the

Gary,

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, I am running the 64-bit version of Ubuntu 10.10 (the current version). It appears that I did not have the 32-bit compatibility files installed. That has now been corrected.

I tried re-setting Einstein in the hopes of beating the remaining 11 hr. blackout but no luck so I'll just have to wait it out.

Here's hoping it works.

Thanks again.

Steve

Gary, An update. IT

Gary,

An update. IT WORKED!

E@H is working on 2 WU's and hopefully in the next week or so as completed WU's are validated, I'll see credits verifying that.

One final question.

I'm getting a new Nvidia 460GTX Fermi card today for my @home machine. Does, or will, E@H benefit from double-precision capability? If it does, will it recognize the capability automatically or is there something that I have to do?

I'm running Linux (Ubuntu) 64-bit.

Thanks again for the help.

Great!

You should see things faster than that. As soon as any E@H task completes and uploads, force an update which will immediately double your daily quota - 1 -> 2 -> 4 -> 8 ... until you get to 32/day. 5 successful tasks takes you to full quota.

No.

BOINC should recognise the card (I believe) and should be able to use it. I have no NVIDIA cards - therefore no experience. Even if I had such a card, I would probably not use it for Einstein yet, simply because Einstein ties up a full CPU with the GPU and makes pretty inefficient use of the GPU (a lot of the calculations in a task still require the CPU). Your quad core would still run just 4 tasks concurrently, even though you have 5 processing elements.

I do have ATI 4850s which have double precision capability and which I use at Milkyway. So on one of my quads I can have 4 E@H tasks running on the CPU and a MW task running on the GPU. The MW tasks which would take a couple of hours on a CPU can be done in a couple of minutes on a 4850 GPU. I feel I'm using the hardware much more efficiently that way.

Cheers,
Gary.

Gary, I see that I'm now

Gary,

I see that I'm now up to 4 E@H WU's and I am showing completed credits. Hooray! I'll force another update in about an hour when another WU completes.

As to the double-precision questions, that's good to know. I'll go into the E@Home prefs and change the GPU settings to "no" so that MW has a clear shot at it.

Thanks,
Steve

If you get a card with only single-precision there are projects where it will work efficiently too, Milky Way REQUIRES double-precision cards though.

I see where I am getting ABP

I see where I am getting ABP WU's that are preferentially using a CPU core and the Fermi card. The task list will also show a download of an ABP WU for the single-precision Nvidia GPU for a few seconds but then it always disappears.

I see over in the Cruncher's forum that there was an intent to develop a Fermi app for the ABPs but the last entry seems to have been in Aug. Looks like they accomplished it.

Now to see about getting MW to use the Fermi. It sees it during the WU downloads, but like with the single-precision GPU and the ABPs, a WU download appears on the task list momentarily for the Fermi but then disappears. I'm working non-GPU WU on MW with no problem.

Any MW problems are best discussed over at their boards. But why a workunit from Einstein shows up and then disappears is an answer i don't have.

No, it's not just "show a download for a few seconds, then it disappears"
It is: Download (OK) -> Compute (Error after a few sec) -> Report
Error tasks for computer 3623110

Check again in your Einstein@Home preferences
that you have setting:

Use NVIDIA GPU No

Do you already have the Fermi card installed (+ newer drivers supporting it)?

Your Error-ed tasks show:
Using CUDA device #1 "GeForce 8400 GS"
http://einsteinathome.org/task/208144578

And your Computer details show no GPU at all (Coprocessors ---):
http://einsteinathome.org/host/3623110
