I'm unable to change the permissions. This is a problem that I've been having with Ubuntu 10.10. Even when I sign on as root, it says at the top that root is the owner, but down below it says that I'm not the owner and any change options are greyed out.

As long as we've got computers, who needs enemies!

Ok, thanks for trying. I may try a re-install since I'm not processing any WUs right now and so, won't lose anything.

Thanks again.

You might ask in the Linux section but did you try using the 'sudo' command? And I am not a 'Linux guy' either.

Try detaching from E@H. Go

Try detaching from E@H. Go into the boinc directory (I have no idea where the package manager puts it in Ubuntu) and make sure all the E@H files are gone. The reattach to E@H. Report back.

I'm a Fedora person, so I'm probably not that much help :)

Thanks to everyone for the

Thanks to everyone for the suggestions.

I was able to re-set the permissions for /etc/boinc and /user/share/ and the boinc sub-directories there. Now, I am the owner and the BOINC group has full permissions.

I've noted an inconsistency in that Milky Way set up a sub-dir under /share as well as a config file but Cosmology did not, yet both are going full-bore. SETI also set one up, but Einstein and Orbit did not. I can't find any Einstein-related files on my machine.

I tried detaching and re-attaching but I still get a "Comm deferred message". I even tried a reset and re-boot but no joy.

I did note earlier that, very briefly on the Projects screen of BAM, Einstein would give a "Computational Error" message before giving the "Comm Deferred" message. When I go under "Messages" it only shows messages such as reached daily limit of 4 tasks, no work, etc. but no mention of the "Computational error" message.

Does any of this help?

Also, mention was made of a Linux group here but I haven't been able to locate them.

Thanks to all for your help.

Some file of your WU cannot

Some file of your WU cannot be opened for some reason:
http://einsteinathome.org/task/206390814

6.10.58

WU download error: couldn't get input files:

p2030_53495_30427_0033_G39.03-00.43.N_2_120.binary
-200

]]>

Isn't that file on your machine or does it have the wrong owner/permissions?

You may look for the file by typing as root in a command shell something like

# find / -name 'p2030*'

Your machine 3623110 is

Your machine 3623110 is reporting both 'Error while downloading' and 'Error while computing' errors.
It seems your software installation is screwed up with respect to ownership/permissions.
May be you better reinstall BOINC?

Thanks for the feedback.

Thanks for the feedback. You're right. I can't find that file anywhere.

I'll do a complete removal, re-boot, and re-install after the current batch of Cosmology and Milky Way WUs are done.

Maybe by late this afternoon, I'll be able to give it a try.

Thanks for the help. Here's hoping.

My settings are: max

My settings are:
max memory usage when active: 3063.61MB
max memory usage when idle: 3676.33MB
max disk usage: 10.00GB
max CPUs used: 6
don't compute while active
suspend work if non-BOINC CPU load exceeds 25 %

and now the client runs without various error messages.
Unfortunately, under Win 7 OS x64 the Einstein@Home can't handle with all accessible rources (RAM and CPU).
