From time to time, I'm prompted by a pop-up that asks "BOINC needs to connect to the network. May it do so now?"

But my computer is always connected to the internet. What steps can I take to avoid the pop-up, that is, to let BOINC connect as necessary?

Can you tell us what version of BOINC you are using. I know that the latest versions have fixed some connection issues, but I don't know if this is one of them.

Also, when looking at your results, it looks like you've got a few client errors due to the graphics bug. Two ways to fix this. Download the beta app (really, it's "beta" in name only) or choose not to use the screensaver and show graphics options.

Hopefully someone more experienced in the networking stuff will be able to help you.

You can go into the options,

You can go into the options, and change it from Automatic to Use Lan on the Boinc Manager.

This will stop that pop-up box.

I'm running 4.79, which I just downloaded about two days ago.

On another thread, I've been advised to try the beta version, so I'll get around to doing so..

Thanks, have now set the option as you suggest. Hope that works.

4.79 is the Einstein version,

4.79 is the Einstein version, what version of BOINC was the question.

I see you are running 5.2.13, which is the current version.

Mark,

Welcome to the Einstein@Home project. We hope you enjoy your stay here.

I saw your other thread and I saw your concern about the two processes. As the others explained to you, you are fortunate to have a P4 that is HT (Hyperthreading) capable. Your one physical processor is capable of performing as if it were two (virtual) cpus and therefore quite happily process two work units at a time for maximum throughput. I also have a machine like yours but it is only 2.6GHz so yours is a bit faster. I have no problems doing normal work on this machine so you shouldn't be too concerned to use both cpus.

Also in that thread you commented that the first result had a client error because you aborted it. Unfortunately you've now had three of these errors and they all look very much like the graphics bug. If you have ATI graphics hardware it's almost certainly the case. You have two options:-

1. Set your Windows screensaver to "Blank" and do not click any "show graphics" functions, and see if the problems stop, or
2. Upgrade your science app (4.79) to the beta app as previously suggested.

There is a new science app supposedly coming out "soon" which should fix these issues for good. If you can put up without the graphics for a while, I would suggest option 1. until the new science app arrives.

Hope this helps.

Cheers,
Gary.

Open Boinc Manager.
At the tope there is a menu bar, go to Commands.
Set the option "Network activity always available".
Go to Options, Options, Connections.
Set "Use my LAN connection". Press OK.

If the popup comes back up again, make a notice if it isn't your firewall asking this question.

Oops, sorry about giving you the version number for the wrong component. There are a lot of new things to learn about BOINC+Einstein, so it'll take a while for me to master it. I think the BOINC platform is fantastic and visionary, but there are a number of moving parts confronting the uninitiated.

May I suggest that the hyperthread issue (ie, two-processes on a single CPU) be added to the FAQ. Weeks ago, I had installed BOINC+climate on another computer, and also noted that 2 processes were running on that computer. But on that computer, for whatever reason, it turns out that interactive performance was significantly degraded by the 2 simultaneous processes. If I knew I could limit BOINC to 1 process, then I would not have uninstalled it on that computer.

I didn't see the "Use my LAN connection" setting in the FAQ either, but maybe I missed it during a quick scan. I'd suggest that this setting be the default, given this age of cable/DSL/always-on Internet access.

Following your and others' suggestions, I've turned off the graphics, until the new version becomes available.

LOL! I love the "number of moving parts" image... it is SO accurate! I've been comparing it as Classic:BOINC Notepad:Word - maybe Classic:BOINC bicycle:car would be better...

The automatic detection SHOULD work regardless of dial-up/always-on. I haven't changed it on any of my machines, I'm on a cable modem - no problems. But, this is Windows... no idea why some things happen the way they do. The "use my LAN" would _not_ work for folks on dial-up, so it's "safer" to use the one that's most likely to work for anyone as the default, and deal with the exceptions. I don't think it's a common enough problem to make the FAQ - you're only about the third or fourth I've seen that have had it.

Now, the HyperThreading issue, with more and more dual-core and HT CPUs out there, probably should be covered. We just had one guy complaining that only two of his four G5's in his new PowerMac Quad were running BOINC... so he upped it to 4 and is happy!

Another enhancement that

Message 20786 in response to message 20785

Another enhancement that might help the "newbie" is the explicit display of the work unit results to be verified before credit is given. Until I understood this concept, I wondered if my work unit credits had been sent into the vaporous aether. A fickle user might think: I give them my unused computer cycles to use, yet I get no credits, so why bother?

It would be great for the BOINC Manager "Project" tab to be able to retrieve and then display a column labelled "Pending Credits", or similar.
