I have quickly looked around and have not found anything explaining what the credits are used for (if anything other than bragging rights), I am not interested in making any gain from doing this but I am curious.

No use but simply a measure of your work. Credits vary from one project to another. Many give you thosands of credits, others only a few. It is up to you to choose. I am running 7 BOINC projects.
