I'm just a home PC. Despite working all day and half the night, it's going to take me a few years to reach the Godzillion Credits shown in the Top Participants list - and I assume they will have moved on by then.
There must be others like me out there who don't have 20 computers, each with multiple 10 GHz processors and terrabytes of work space that would idle all day except for this project.
I know I'm being precious, but what about some celebration links for losers like us?

My PC is comparable to yours, and I'm happy just to watch it crunch quietly the next WU (in little more than 8 hours of CPU time). It could not do much on its own, but I like the idea it's part of a scientific supercomputer - that's what BOINC is all about. And when I take a look at the page of www.boincstats.com, I feel good without having to measure up to the heavy crunching farms out there. It's fun, really.
Have a lucky and satisfying day.

Hey fellow home PC!
We "losers" outnumber all the "winners" - think of it that way! That means we're number 1 - Wahoo!

Paul YOU ARE NOT A LOSER!
Just Because some of us are obcessed with BOINC.
It is a Hobby for me and yes I like my stats it's fun and my little
farm of puters (8) provided me with lots of headaches to last a lifetime.
Your Home PC is just as important as the largest cruncher 1 wu at a time....
Consider each of mu puters as one of 20,000 just like you.
We are a Army Everyone has a duty to the whole, Again 1 WU at a time.
All My Puters were on the scrap heap of broken digits and none are the bestest
or the fastest. But the combined efforts of all contribute to the whole. My slowest crunches 1 WU every 24hrs and My fastest every 5.5 hours.....
I crunched Classic for 6 years one computer and amassed 2.2years of crunching time. I still felt part of the team who was part of the team of the whole...
Keep up the good work Paul, Thanks for your efforts!
Tim

My idea on this is that you could get a listing of maybe 11 participants who were roughly at the same ranking as you, say from five above down to five below.
Different rankings would be shown for total credits since E@H started and for the recent average credit.
You'd also be told your position in the listing.
By looking at this listing every day or so you'd get an idea whether you were rising or falling.
Just a token to those who like to bring in a little bit of competition into what is primarily a co-operative venture. So long as people treat it as a bit of fun it seems a good idea to me.
This was done on another distributed computing project I was involved in (outside of BOINC), you can see my current ranking in this (now almost dead) project here

Our team just broke into the top 1,000! I find that just as exciting as struggling to maintain #1 status. Setting your own goals adds interest without causing an ulcer!

Hello,
I think the task distribution here at Boinc works fine:
The project teams does the science, the application coding, and they deliver the raw data for the statistics. They even include some rudimentary statistics on the site as well.
The eager community delivers all kind of statistics, banners, competition, gadgets...you name it, it's probably already there.
