Bangor ME, tomorrow 's low:: -29°C (-20F)
Yes the large lad mass of North America cools the air as it comes off the Pacific Ocean and then when the air flow comes from the Artic it can be bitterly cold like you said. Those of the West Coast of the US tend to have more moderate weather so when they get freezing temps that last for a bit it can be big news. For me personally I'm kind of like you in that I'm in a little cut out on the East Coast of the US so don't usually get the below freezing very often exactly because like you the air flow tends to be moderated by the Atlantic Ocean. In fact right now my tends are in the 40'sF but tonight it will go down into the mid 20's but by Tuesday it will be back up near 70F again for the highs.
Tomorrow (Wednesday) I get rain. The lucky people north of me are getting pretty serious snow warnings. And the people south of me are getting pretty serious thunderstorms/rain/tornado warnings.
Who said being in the "middle" is always bad? :)

Lower West Coast. Parts of the City of Los Angeles may get snow in the next couple of days. Yesterday it was in the low 70's. Things can change fast in the desert. Don't ask about natural gas prices.
And here I am enjoying mid 70's today and near the 80's tomorrow, Thursday and on Friday it will be close to 80F as well!! On Saturday it will only be in the mid 50's but then right back up into the 70's on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday next week. They are telling us on the local news to be sure to put our sunscreen on if we go outside!!
We had many weeks of almost constant cool temps around 5°C/40F. Not really winter as it should be in February. But cloudy, foggy, drizzling, sometimes rain, rarely sunshine. Unpleasant. But temps only dropped below freezing once or twice a week during the night. There will be some snow on Saturday. Then it gets cold again for a week: -4°C/25F each night. Afterwards eventually some early traces of spring up to 16°C/60F.
