I happened to come across this WU and noticed that, although a quorum of 2 validated results has been reached, the WU was sent out 4 times. One result failed and another is still pending. I don't understand why those last 2 were necessary.

Unusual Work Unit/Quorum
)
Well, the result #4 seems to imply the deadline was 14 days. 14 days after result #2 was sent was 6-Aug 16:33 UTC, and it hadn't come back yet, so it sent out result #3, which immediately failed, so result #4 was sent out. A day later, result #2 came back. The thing is, I've had it happen where I had a valid result arrive late (in another project) and got no credit for it, so I don't know whether that varies by project, as to why result #2 got credit.

I think you are right about the 2 week deadline. (I hadn't done the math when I first posted and had just assumed #2 had come in on time.) I have seen deadlines extended on other projects to accommodate unusual circumstances (SETI last year and SZTAKI recently). But in those cases, the projects were encountering serious problems that made it impossible for users to meet the original deadlines. And, the extensions were well publicized. That doesn't seem to apply here.

Post deadline work will be granted credit *if* it's returned before the replacement work returns. This is done because the result was useful in getting the quorum in sooner.

I’m reminded of the old saying about hiking parties in grizzly country: it doesn’t matter whether or not you can run faster than a bear—as long as you’re quicker than your companions.

Personally I think that's stupid. God put .45/.50 magnum revolvers on this world for a reason. Dropping a charging bear is one of them. :)

Good luck dropping a bear quickly with a handgun - they are tough.

Wrist wreaker rounds like the .454/500 casual, and equivilants were designed for close defense against bears and wild boar. The guiding philosophy seems to've been that orthopedic surgeons are better than truma docs, something I fullheartedly agree with.
