I tried to run einstein@home about a year ago and got errors on every work unit I processed. I decided to give it a try agian as I am really interested in running this project, but I received this error on the first work unit I processed this time:

Quote:
11/23/2005 4:48:32 AM|Einstein@Home|Unrecoverable error for result l1_0950.5__0950.9_0.1_T07_S4lC_1 (The semaphore cannot be set again. (0x67) - exit code 103 (0x67))

I don't have the specific error from the last time I tried to run einstein@home, but those errors messed with the video and sound (color was messed up, there was a square around the mouse pointer and the sound sounded like it originated in a tin can). A reboot was all that was required to fix the problem, but it happened on every work unit. This time that didn't happen, I just received the above error in the log.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Version of BOINC? Screensaver on or off? Have you tried any other projects and did they work?

Your Windows box has gotten 3 results sent to it, one each on the 21st, 22nd, and 23rd, but hasn't returned any, I assume due to this error, so there's nothing on the server end for us to look at to determine anything. You can check the Wiki for that error code, but I don't recall ever seeing it before.

The Wiki has no knowledge of the error. So please send your stderrdae.txt, stdoutdae.txt and stdoutgui.txt files, plus all the *.old files in zipped format to Paul D. Buck at [mailto]p.d.buck-[at]-comcast.net[/mailto].

I deserve to be chastised by Ageless again for what I am about to admit.

I am sure I have seen "The semaphore cannot be set again. (0x67) - exit code 103 (0x67)" messages before now. And, I am sure I saw them while looking at results from users posting screensaver/client error problems. I am also pretty sure I attempted to use the Wiki to find out what they meant (and of course failed to do so). I just attributed the failure to my ineptness at doing Wiki searches.

Anyway, I think the message could be vaguely related to the "graphics bug" problem. Hope this helps some.

Hello, thanks for the

Hello, thanks for the replies.

I am using BOINC version 4.43, and eisntein @home version 4.79. I have used BOINC for seti@home for about a year with no problems. I had similar problems with the protein predictor project, but it was a while ago and I don't remember the error message I received. The screen saver is off. I use the starfield scrensaver that came with XP. However, I do have an ATI video card. After reading through the forum, I take it that was the one involved in the "graphics bug"?

I have only worked one einstein@home work unit this time. BOINC hasn't got around to the other two. In fact, BOINC just dowloaded another work unit for einstein@home. Should I suspend the project until this is figured out?

I have found the files that Ageless mentioned and will email them to Paul D. Buck shortly along with a link to this thread for an explanation of the problem (assuming that Ageless isn't Paul D. Buck, and will need some background).

Just to add to what James has posted and avoid someone else having to look it up...

4.43
The semaphore cannot be set again. (0x67) - exit code 103 (0x67)

ERROR! sftIndex = -1711435

None of this rings a bell with me.

Hello,

I thought I would post an update.

After reading through the forum a bit more I read found out about the beta client and decided to go ahead and install it. All seems to be going fine. I've completed and been given credit for 4 work units.

I also upgraded to BOINC 5.2.8. During the install I chose the option to install it as a service, which I rememeber doing with 4.43 (I was trying to duplicate the command line seti client and setidriver as much as possible). So, the graphics version of the screensaver wasn't installed. I'm not sure if this helps identify the problem or not, but it might be one more piece of the puzzle.

Graphics works fine, even when you run it as a service. But you have to change the service properties to get it to work:

Open "Component Services" - click Start, Administrative tools, Component Services.

Click "Services" in the left pane, right click "BOINC" in the right pane and click "Properties". Switch to the Logon tab and select "Local system account", check the "interact with desktop" box and click "Apply". Switch back to the "General" tab, stop and restart the service.

In Boinc Manager reconnect to BOINC (click "File", "Select computer", "OK")

Try the graphics - select the running workunit in the work tab and click "Show graphics". A window should pop up showing the rotating starsphere. First time that window is behind Boinc Manager though, thats a Windows feature.

Try the screensaver - in the Display Properties dialog, Screen Saver tab, select the BOINC screensaver and click "Preview". Or select the BOINC screensaver, turn your mouse upside down, press the tab key twice to get to the "Preview" button and press the space key. The starsphere should appear "full screen". If you only get the flying BOINC logo, make note of the messages (there might be more than one) and report them here.

When you try the graphics, please check the message log in Boinc Manager to make sure its not reporting anything unusual.

WARNING!!! In some versions, or some situations, this could cause you to do anything from suspending the project, to detaching. Watch what that "tab" is taking you to before you hit space...

In the screensaver properties box?

Okay, now I know what you meant... I selected BOINC itself, and the two tabs put me on "suspend"... I was thinking this was some feature of BOINC Manager that I didn't know about. Sorry, I'm nowhere near Windows-literate, I'm a Mac guy. :-)
