Is there any reward for Akos Fekete regarding his optimizations?

I also think this is great

I also think this is great news. I am glad that the Einstein team has found his help useful, and can utilize his potential for bigger and better optimizations of the code.

Good job Akos!

Very good move. I believe

It's nonsense actually ( which is probably a relief to you ). Derived from a Welsh comedy show called 'Spank the Donkey', in my excitement at the news I just adapted it ..... :-)
I know what you're thinking and yes, I do need to get a life..... :-)

We are very happy to have hired Akos as a consultant for Einstein@Home. He's currently visiting the AEI and right now sitting next to me over the code.

I hope Akos will do the same good job for Linux-Users as he did for all Windows-Users.

With access to the c++ code

With access to the c++ code itself he should be able to get *NIXx86 to run at similar levels to WINx86, since he can just insert the hand written inner loops in place of the equivilant c++, and gcc can then write all the other junk he was stumped by around them. Nonx86 platforms should be more interesting. The generalized better algorithm work should be easy enough to implement into the crossplatform c++ codebase, but hand tweaked asm for annother architecture's something else entirely. It's like the difference between speaking English, Chinese, and Basque. Completely different vocabularies (instructions) and grammers (hardware details needed to get the best performance). Mac's will probably be ok since there's someone else on the staff who can do decent PPC asm work, oddball stuff like sparcs are probably going to remain in the dust somewhat.

I do wonder what sort of deal Akos managed to get. Normally CON$ultant$ make big money, but by doing the work for free on his own time Akos has badly undermined his negotiating position. OTOH, the project staff has to be pavloving over being able to examine the s5 data in far greater depth than they could with s4.

Spank the Pony, innit? Kind of like Kids in the Hall, but by a female troupe? Very funny, anway …

The expressions of that form that I’ve encountered ‘in the wild’, the variations being in the choice of animal, are generally (rather coarse) euphemisms with the same meaning as “beat the meat, “pound the pastrami, and so on.

It's like the end of a Frank

It's like the end of a Frank Capra movie. I hope Akos is having a Wonderful Life.

You know, I truly suspect your right on both counts there!
Ahhhh ..... with Aussies our powers of logic go down ( from whatever baseline ) whenever our excitement goes up... :-)
Anyhow, Akos is making a quid for his efforts, and I have a strong feeling he will be able to bridge to less familiar platforms etc .....
Cheers, Mike.

Sadly, I've just done some

Sadly, I've just done some Googling and it appears that spanking just-about-anything is a euphemism for, well, choking the chicken. Maybe we shouldn't talk about this in a thread about rewarding Akos - he may feel uncomfortable.
