task time estimated wrong by BOINC

Topic 197885

I was noticing that the elapsed time for my tasks on an GTX 970 is very different from what BOINC estimates and it seems to be diverging. Is there a way to fix this? The real task time for a BRP4G is 48 minutes on the average, but BOINC estimates it to be 1:53 hours today; yesterday it was 1:21 hours. The estimated times are a lot closer on my other computers. I am also running FGRP4 tasks, as I am on the others.

Is there a way to help it get back on track?

task time estimated wrong by BOINC

Each completed BRP4G task is probably nudging it closer to a right estimate, but each completed FGRP4 task taking it the other direction--based on your reports.

As to what you can do:

1. just wait--it will probably eventually get better
2. if you really want it accurate pretty soon, run only one kind of work.
3. if you want it accurate even sooner you can make edits to support file--there is material on this point posted around here somewhere.

As archae86 eluded to, this

As archae86 eluded to, this is a BOINC problem, not an Einstein problem.

BOINC keeps track of a single offset for each project, instead of per sub-project in a project. So some units run at a faster rate and some run at a slower rate, because of the type of processing they do. Some need a lot higher math functions, while others just need to do a quicker scan through or similar type work.

So estimates will only stabilize if you do a single sub-project.

There is talk that BOINC is working to fix this, but in the mean time we all live with these wild estimates.

Well looking at it now the

Well looking at it now the BRP4G estimate is down to 1:34. The FGRP4 is much closer to its 5:09 running time and estimated at 5:49. I guess I will wait. Something threw it off, maybe my overclocking that reduced the time taken made the estimates go the wrong way.

On another computer where I just changed video cards, the BRP4G estimate is spot on. You'd think the computer that had the same card since the beginning would be spot on too. I just checked, the FGRP4 is spot on too.

If you are running the latest

If you are running the latest version of the BOINC Manager, you can set the dcf_debug flag in the logging via Event Log Diagnostic Flags under the Advanced menu. I found that really accelerates the convergence of the estimated task completion times to their actual. Updates the DCF in big chunks after each task completion.
