I'm still getting max disk usage errors. I went thru this a couple of weeks ago and at that time I allocated more space for BOINC everywhere I could, cuz' it seemed that nothing was working in terms of changing the amount of disk space that BOINC could use.

Somewhere I found the right place and increased my max disk usage to 20gb from 10gb. This seemed to fix the problem.

The thing is, if I look at the DISK tab in BOINC Mgr, it indicates that BOINC is using 532.5 MB and that 19.48 GB are available to BOINC. This adds up correctly. The disk space used is used by Einstein (512.26 MB) and Collatz (3.79 MB).

However, 2 days ago I had 5 failed WU's and on each of them, the stderr output says "maximum disk usage exceeded". In my mind, this just can't be. I'm only using a quarter of the space allotted for BOINC and I'm running out of space???????

There is 1.14 TB free space on the drive, so I've got plenty of room. So now I need to ask the pro's, "what is going on"? Why are these WU's failing? I would be most happy if someone could explain this to me.

The task id's are:
298787979
298787978
298787938
298787867
298787862

still getting disk space errors

Hi!

BOINC offers many ways to limit disk usage, and it can be quite confusing as you have to check all of them when there is a disk space problem.

First off all, in addition to the web settings, you have local settings that can be edited on a per-host basis in Boinc Manager. Those settings have higher prio than the web settings.

Please check the following settings:

-Use at most xxx GB of space
-Leave at least xxx GB of space free
-Use at most xx % of disk space (!!!)
-Use at most xx % of page file (swap space).

What is strange is that the error occurs while the app is running, I'll need to look a bit deeper into this. It doesn't seem to be a general problem of teh app or the WU data (e.g. excessive disk use by the app), otherwise we would see this kind of problem more frequently.

Here's to give you a clue. The "Maximum disk usage exceeded" message is gotten when the amount of disk space that the task uses exceeds the amount of space specified in the n amount given to the task.
So yes, it's not just the "Use at most xxx GB of space" value that a user should adapt, but the other values as well. Be reasonable. There's no way that BOINC needs 20GB of space under any given circumstances.

Now, the 'weird thing' is that it's only the Gamma-ray pulsar search #1 v0.23 's that are affected. His S6's come out without a problem. Something different, more strict, within this application about that disk usage setting?

Hmm, the tasks are configured

Hmm, the tasks are configured to allow 2MB of disk usage...more than enough.

Bikeman et al, I have

Bikeman et al,

I have checked all of those parameters and have really high numbers set for them. I went through all of that when this problem first appeared several weeks ago. For the record though, BOINC Mgr is set thusly:

-Use at most xxx GB of space - (swap space). 20 gb
-Leave at least xxx GB of space free 100 gb
-Use at most xx % of disk space (!!!) 50%
-Use at most xx % of page file 100%

The last one may be a bit too excessive, so I'll dial it down somewhat. I've reset it for 50%. My swap file is something like 12.5 gb and I never run anything that requires that much disk space, even without the swap file.

The computing preferences for my account at http://einstein.phys.uwm.edu/prefs.php?subset=global are set this way:

DISK - Use at most: 20gb
DISK - Leave free at most: 100gb
DISK - Use at most: 30% of total (my available total is 1.15TB)
Swap space - Use at most: 100%

As in Boinc Mgr, I will change the swap space parameter to match.

As Ageless pointed out, the S6's work just fine. It's always been the gamma ray pulsar searches that have failed. This is also true for when the trouble started.

If anyone needs anymore info, please let me know. I'd really like to get to the bottom of this.

Does the client still give a

Does the client still give a line like this in the startup messages:
08-Jun-2012 02:08:46 [---] Preferences limit disk usage to 1.86GB

Quote:
-Leave at least xxx GB of space free 100 gb
-Use at most xx % of disk space (!!!) 50%

Why do you keep so much from BOINC? I'd try (at least temporarily) values of 1 GB and 99% respectively.

Are you setting the values locally or online?

Gundolf

I had similar problem

I had similar problem recently. Many (but not all) gamma ray tasks failed with maximum disk usage exceeded message. There were no real problems with disk space (more than 100GB free, available for boinc, only einstein project running on that computer).

I discovered that two of my slot directories contained cca 20MB stderr.old file. The file was always present. It contained old crash log of the gamma ray application. I could not delete the file, it was always recreated with original 20MB size and content after boinc restart. I suppose, that boinc detected 20MB slot directory and created error message due to application specific disk quota.

I use standard boinc directory (c:/ProgramData/BOINC). But when I searched for those files, I found copies of them in c:/users//AppData/Roaming/.... Hope the path is correct, it was some time ago. I thought that win7 stores data written by applications directly to Program Files directory there. Searching for those files is somewhat tricky, both ProgramData and AppData directories are hidden.

There were no crashed gamma ray tasks since I deleted all stderr.old copies (from slot and AppData directories).

einstien's currently using almost 9GB on my high end box. I'm not sure what the CPU/GPU app split is; but I could see a dual socket dual GPU box hit 20GB with newer hardware than mine (I7-920 and GTX 560)

STan, The only place I

STan,

The only place I found a stderr.old file was: c:\users\mdawson\appdata\local\virtualstore\programdata\boinc\slots\0. It was about 33mb, but I was able to delete it. Slots 0 and 4 both contained a stderr.txt file, but they apparently can't be deleted because they are open. Given that pattern, I don't see why the remaining slots don't have stderr.txt files. Gamma ray searches are running on 5 of my 6 cores allotted to Einstein. A BRP is running on the 6th.

Gundolf, I'm not sure what

Gundolf,

I'm not sure what you mean. "Why do you keep so much from BOINC? I'd try (at least temporarily) values of 1 GB and 99% respectively." What am I keeping from BOINC? I've thrown everything I have at it. Perhaps you mean FOR BOINC? The answer to that is I was trying anything and everything to solve this problem. Disk space I got plenty of, so if I'm setting values more than they should be, it "shouldn't" be a problem.

I just had 2 Gamma-Ray pulsar

I just had 2 Gamma-Ray pulsar searches fail. I don't know exactly why yet, but status says Computation Error. I was playing a game at the same time, so there may be some correlation to that.
