Not surprised. We have a solid overcast where I live with a ceiling ~1200 feet. No camera tracking possible. Best to wait and get it right.

TL: thanks for the double post info. I thought it was a general courtesy.

My nasty secret is that as mod I can edit any time I please, which is probably unfair to others. However, knowing that, I indicate that with the "( edit )" construct after the closure of the original item ie. insert after "Cheers, Mike" in my case. Exceptions are very occasional correction of rather minor punctuation/spelling issues in the original but that is normally in the usual edit timeout window. But as you will readily note I do tend to just edit, edit & edit rather than double post. In any event it's merely a style thing really ....

As for the launch tomorrow, I get to watch it during my lunch break. That's nice, but they needn't worry on my account if rescheduling. It is clear they are sticking to their usual protocol/rigor though, no slipping on that due to 'go fever' regardless of how special* the launch is. Which is good.

Cheers, Mike.

* .... reminds me of a lumbar puncture I once did. In the presence of two consultants, a registrar, another intern and of course the patient ( a child ) plus their relative who was holding their hand. It was a doddle thanks to the youthful simplicity of the patient's lumbar spine, but there was no pressure to get it right first time or anything ! Naww :-)))

It didn't go boom. There was supposed to be an earth shattering boom. Someone has stolen my Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space-X Modulator.

Good show guys.

The orbcomm website now

The orbcomm website now asserts that

Quote:
SpaceX successfully launched the Falcon 9 rocket and deployed all 11 ORBCOMM OG2 satellites in nominal orbits.

Maybe there were some anomalies of interest somewhere, but it sure appears that the big picture stuff happened very right.

One odd detail: while the launch video linked from the orbcomm website was clearly the same content stream, on my PC the one starting from Orbcomm could be dialed up to 1080p, while starting at SpaceX only got to 720 or such.

Of course, as a night launch, the cape area video of both ascent and descent was not very enlightening. When the light bloomed out as the rocket plume touched the landing pad, I actually thought for a couple of seconds it had just blown up.

Elon has twittered that he is

Elon has twittered that he is going to LZ-1 to see the returned stage. Any money he kisses it or something. :-)

As for ORBCOMM I guess they will go down as the ones that backed SpaceX regardless. That was not a trivial risk : you could insure the payload perhaps but probably not the total business cost of a failed launch.

As for a night landing, well that is very impressive to boot. There should be a door knock of all the "clever" people who bagged SpaceX so they can tell us why today didn't happen. Inform them that there is good caution and then there is mere schadenfreude, so they may spot the distinction.

Cheers, Mike.

If he does, they had better be sure they have washed it down for any residual chemicals from the flight....

Background info states that LZ-1 was the main site for Titan testing, way back when ie. the Gemini series. Most appropriate.

Cheers, Mike.
