Topic 194845

i installed them both, but i cant pick up any of the computers including the one installed.
however the programme does detect all 3 of my computers but it cant get any information off it.

on Bonicview the problem is, i find all 3 computers but it says there is no boinc client behind this port. how do i find out what port boinc client is working under???

The problem with BoincTask, is at first it worked on the computer that i installed it on, but then it just disappeared. when i click on find computers, it finds all 3 computers but when i try check the box to next the corrosponding computer to select it. it unchecks it self as soon as i check the box.

someone please help resolve my problem

Thanks

Manney

Most likely it is due to firewalls on the computers. You have to create exceptions/rules to allow BOINCView traffic. It uses port 31413 or somesuch I think.

Also, given that firewalls are OK, there is the issue of the BOINC client on any of the machines ( including the one you have BOINC View on ) accepting interrogation from BOINC View. For that there are the remote host config and password files to be set up.

I can't recall all the ins & outs of this at the moment, but I'm pretty sure the BOINC View documentation outlines it. Here would be a good starting point.

Cheers, Mike.

I think it's more like Pi: 31416 ;-)

@Manney
There's a forum thread at the BOINC dev boards:
BoincTasks alternative BOINC manager
and Fred also has a forum at his own site:

You need two files (put in

You need two files (put in the BOINC data directory):
gui_rpc_auth.cfg - in this file you need to create a password you use to connect to this computer.
remote_hosts.cfg - in this file you need to put the name or IP of the computer authorized to talk to the client.

Ah .... touche! :-] :-)

Cheers, Mike.

( edit ) @manney : so very specifically you have to do the remote config thing for the machine running Boinc View - so that it can interview the BOINC client on the same machine. That once took me a whole day to work out. But then again, that's why RTFM is always good advice. :-)

( edit ) Also take care not to set the refresh interval ( determines how frequently BOINC View queries the machines ) too short. I was once packet sniffing for an unrelated reason and was quite surprised by the bandwidth consumed. Every 5 - 10 minutes or so is ample. Most machines aren't going to radically change their BOINC state much sooner than that.

Ah, Norton .... I don't use that product.

In the first instance I'd exit the firewalls on all machines to test that firewalls are the problem. ( Bear in mind that there are potentially two firewalls with each machine-to-machine interaction ). If BOINC View then behaves as desired then the firewalls need exceptions. If no gain then you'd need to proceed to remote/config/passwords et al.

Cheers, Mike.

Just an FYI: 1.) All

Just an FYI:

1.) All relatively current versions of BOINC create GUI password files (gui_rpc_auth.cfg) when they are installed by default. I would not recommend using the same one if you have multiple hosts, for security reasons.

What you do need to do is copy that PW into the config dialog for each host in BV when you are setting up the hosts to be monitored.

2.) There are two ways to enable hosts running BOINC to be remotely monitored:

The first way, which is the simplest to implement, is suitable if ALL the machines are behind a router or HFA (Hardware Firewall Appliance), or accessed via VPN tunnel by the monitoring host. IOW's they are ALL on 'trusted' networks.

What you need to do is add "-allow_remote_gui_rpc" to the image path command in the registry using Regedit. You'll find it in "HKLM/System/CurrentContolSet/Services/BOINC".

The second way is to use the remote_hosts.cfg file previously mentioned. You need to have the LOCAL IP Address of all hosts you plan to monitor a BOINC client FROM listed in the file, AND it has to be placed in the BOINC or BOINC Data folder (depending on the major version of BOINC) of ALL the hosts to be monitored remotely.

Obviously, this can be difficult to do if the 'local' address for a monitoring host is a public (routable) and/or dynamic one.

3.) The default listening port for GUI RPC is 31416. However, depending on your specific network architecture and monitoring host location you may have to change the port number to be able to 'hit' all the target hosts remotely.

To do this you can specify a different port for BOINC to listen on by adding "-gui_rpc_port x" to the previously mentioned command line in the registry, where x is the number of the port you want BOINC to listen on. You would then enter that port number in the BV setup dialog along with the RPC PW.

Here is a sample registry command line:

"D:\Program Files\BOINC\boinc.exe" -daemon -gui_rpc_port 31421 -allow_remote_gui_rpc

As others have mentioned, you will also have to allow BOINC to open a listening port (act as a server) in the Windows firewall or whatever third party security suite you are using to complete the process.

Setting up BOINC Tasks is generally similar, but I don't have any first hand experience with it.
