Seeing the following numbers on the Server Status page is a little disturbing:
HOST COMPUTERS Approximate #
in database 339,513
registered in past 24 hours 820
with credit 210,613
active in past 7 days 74,967

This tells me at one point or another 339+K computers have connected to Einstein, of which 210+K have done at least one result, but only about 75K are actively crunching. Less than 1/4 of the register computers and nearly only 1/3 of the computers that have crunched before are crunching. Why have we lost so many valuable computers? What can we do to get a few of these back?

With todays connectivity, maybe we can start a little campaigning on our Blogs, Live Journals, etc? I think this is an awesome project, and I have thrown a lot more resources into over the past couple of months. Let's get a few more people here. We can get the current search finished a lot quicker, and move to the next.

What do you say, people? Let's try and get it to at least 100K active!

Slightly disturbing

1 one the inactive's is a hybrid of my new and old pc that's not mergable with either. Old machine's a athlon @1.5 with win2k. New's an A64x2 @2.4 with XPpro. Old one died and since I didn't have a way to do an instant diagnosis I bought a new mobo/etc, and initially ran off the old HD/OS. A crash while figuring out how much I could OC the chip by killed that OS install. MY subsequent XP install was on the new HD I'd bought in anticipation of the upgrade. I subsequently fixed the old machine and gave it a clean OS install on an old, small drive. The A64/2k oprhan won't merge with either of my current machines. It's got 10k credit from the old box and maybe a single workunit from the new CPU. I was using P95 to stresstest rather than risk putting bad data into the project, but didn't take boinc from startup adn was doing a few monites/boot until I killed it.

I've probably got a few

I've probably got a few machines in that bunch too.. recent joins to E@H but then I find they're not fast enough to justify the extra electricity costs and so I shut them down soon after. Cost of electricity gets to be an issue when 3/4 of your machines are running in your home. ;)

Due to the recent

Due to the recent windows-only optimizations I'm considering suspending einstein. Why spend 10 hours processing a block of data when a comparable windows computer can do it in 2?

Nothing travels faster than the speed of light with the possible exception of bad news, which obeys its own special laws.

Consider this option.

I did pull my box

I did pull my box temporarily.

I've always wanted to crunch a Climate Prediction WU, so I'm doing that for the next few weeks... But then I'll be back. I promise.

Jeezzz..... I'm planning to do just that when Einstein@home officially release a Windows-optimised client.... my G5 will be smoked no matter what.... (sigh)....

Surely the official release will be cross-platform? Bruce Allen has already posted that Akosf's improved algorithm - well, the first one anyway, I doubt he's been able to keep up with all of Akosf's prodigious output! - has been incorporated into the official source code: he's just waiting for a hardware upgrade to cope with the rush....

The only reason the optimisations are (currently, unofficially) Windows only is because Akosf is reverse-engineering the binary executables: and he's stated that the Windows binary is much easier to disassemble than the Linux binary. (I'm not sure if he's tried the Mac G5)

The G5 binary is potentially

The G5 binary is potentially far more difficult. You're dealing with a differnt proccessor and a completely different set of assembly instructions. IF Windows X86 is spanish, and linux X86 is french, MacG5 would be Russian.

I think Steve Jobs also realized... ;-)

Please keep in mind that you are punishing the Official E@h project for an unofficial program that is not officially sanctioned. It's sort of like punishing the children of a government that we do not like...

Also, the Windows version was the one that just happened to be optimized because the guy was more familiar with Windows. There is nothing stopping a Linux programmmer for doing the same with Linux.

I can certainly understand your emotional reaction, but logically there is not imho a good reason to suspend E@h for a Linux user. The project values all contributions, and all contributions move the project forward. :)
