I have noticed a SERIOUS problem with Einstein@home in the past 5-6 days. Specifically, the project seems to be suffering from a restless, noisy, and non-understanding user base!

The symptoms are severe. One notices constant COMPLAINING despite a rather large post in a thread made by a project moderator explaining the issue.

Furthermore, MEMORY LOSS is indicated in the fact that many people are FORGETTING that BOINC is meant to be a multi-project platform where outages in one project can be cancelled out with work from other projects.

Lastly, we see ANGER and RUDENESS running rampant as people don't understand that the project is not run by a giant company with infinite money and technical support.

This is a big problem for Einstein and only hinders fixing any other issues that may be around.

But perhaps the scientists aren't the best people to remedy this ailment? Perhaps we are.

Ahh, but Matt, you didn't use the word COMMUNICATION once. Tsk tsk.

There is right and wrong on both sides. COMMUNICATION can help that, cutting down on COMPLAINING, ANGER and FRUSTRATION (direct correlation). And helps with RUDENESS and @#$%-words (co-dependents with ANGER and FRUSTRATION).

It's worth noting that at the recent open day for E@H at AEI/MPG, Bruce did mention ( as an aside with his talk ) the possibility of specific future funding for forum management. That is, a paid position for someone to respond/correspond/moderate ... etc here.

Needless to say, if the fundholders ( ie. whatever structure Prof Allen works within to keep E@H cashed ) OK that, it would be a tremendous boon for the project - not the least of which would be the lower hackles in certain circumstances of information asymmetry!

I for one, obviously, will keep an eye on that channel. :-)

( edit ) You're quite right Jaeden as regards the correlations noted. I'm also pleased you haven't thus far equated correlation with justification [ though some have/can/will, and you may well yet ..... :-) ]. Anyhows, better communication would reduce that 'fear factor' that seems to creep in here sometimes.

Dear Matt,

This definitely got me to laugh out loud. Seriously though, the project has had problems in the past several weeks that should not have happened. Thankfully we are not an air traffic control center or a hostpital, so no one dies when we screw up. But it's not a good thing. So I am not surprised about how many people have complained. In fact it's an indication that people care about our project and want it to work correctly.

In general, I've found Einstein@Home users to be remarkably helpful and smart. Many of our technical problems get sorted out very fast because our users can identify the specific problem. (This happened over the weekend: our new scheduler was not compatible with 4.19 BOINC clients, and a user explained exactly how to fix it.)
