In screensaver info it says that I can display the graphics in a separate graphics window and gain mouse control. Am I making it to difficult; can't seem to accomplish this.

screensaver graphics

You can view the graphics through BOINC Manager->Show graphics (simple view) or ->Advanced view->Tasks tab->select the running task->Show graphics.

Then you can move your mouse around at will.

It's also possible that the screen saver here is interactive when you press and hold down CTRL. But I am not sure of that.

That was once the case, but the interactive nature of the screensaver was lost when there were changes made to how input events are handled, in order to support both old and new Windows platforms.
