screen saver running idle

Have you got a work unit?
Is its Status "Running"?

Once again... fairly naive

Once again... fairly naive stuff from me... but you might go to the "File" menu, and see if "Running Always", "Running on Preferences" or Suspended" is checked and/or if "Disable Network Access" is checked.
