System is AMD Athlon XP 2800+ with Windows XP Service Pack 2, running Boinc 5.2.13. It was my champion Einstein cruncher and it's going down in flames!

Help! Seems to need a log example in the Wiki, is this it? If not, tell me where else to look.

My preferences had

Message 23783 in response to message 23782

My preferences had this

Disk and memory usage
Use no more than 30 GB disk space
Leave at least
(Values smaller than 0.001 are ignored) 0.1 GB disk space free
Use no more than 50% of total disk space
Write to disk at most every 1800 seconds
Use no more than 75% of total virtual memory

It is a 30 G drive with less than 4G used. Only one partition. All it does is BOINC. It was only doing Einstein. Einstein is using around 22 Mb. Could it truly be a disk usage issue?

I don't know what to think, but it's gone two and a half hours now without crashing, so we'll see what's up in the morning.

I think your app is broken or

I think your app is broken or something.
Try a reset.
If that didn't work then try reattach.
*edit* And if not even that worked then install Boinc all over again.

There have been some Core Clients that apparently have problems determinig the free disk space correctly. Which version are you usiong (on this machine)? Switching to a more recent client did the trick at least for me.

Since the above result has a lot of messages related to graphics, I wonder if it is somehow related to the old "graphics bug" problem. Is your graphics card driver up to date? Check here: Message boards : Problems and Bug Reports : FOR INFO ONLY - DOWNLOAD SITES FOR GRAPHICS DRIVERS.

EDIT: Another thought - have you installed the new Windows WMF patch (from Windows Update)? Another recent thread reports a problem after installing it. The symptoms are not at all similar to yours but the timing of your problem makes me suspicious.

Have to look into the video driver thing, but I never use the screen saver, or does that make a difference?

And yes, I have just done Windows Update but two other Windows computers are behaving just fine.

Thanks for your input, Stick and everyone else.

Happy Crunching to all.

Pam

Pam,

I am only guessing here; but, there might be a connection between the Windows Update patch and your problem. That is, I believe the patch dealt with a security vulnerability related to graphics. Your last result indicated a graphics problem in its error message. I know old graphics drivers were sometimes an issue with the v4.79 "graphics bug" problem (and, in rare cases, even when BOINC graphics were not being used). It seems like there might be a connection - but, again, I am just speculating.

EDIT: With regards to the "I have just done Windows Update but two other Windows computers are behaving just fine" question - I have no idea.

Pam,

I see you are getting "disc space" errors again. Are you doing anything which might be generating large temporary files (e.g. downloading/transferring music or video, etc.)?

I'm going to suggest that you change your "Use no more than" pref to 90% (and trust that BOINC won't really use that much). I am also going to suggest that you raise the "Leave at least" value to 1 GB.

You should also reread the Gary Roberts post I pointed you to earlier. (It explains the logic for the first suggestion.) And, while you are at it, you might browse the entire thread. However, you should understand the context. When that thread was active, there were a lot of similar problems being reported. Later, a BOINC problem was discovered and fixed (allegedly). After that, the problem reports died out (until now).

Anyway, I suggest giving these things a try and see if it makes any difference.
