Hello all,

I'm new to this and am definitely a noob. I have 4 tasks that have completed and each one says its ready to report. I've checked online here and the website says it hasn't received any tasks and Boinc Manager hasn't sent any tasks either (looking through the messages list). Is there a way I can manual report the tasks??

Yep.

In BOINC Manager click on the Projects tab (i'm assuming you are in advanced view, not simple). Then click on the line with Einstein and it will be selected. On the left there will be a button that says "update" click on it.

Do know that BOINC will automatically report tasks.

Upload & report is a two way system. Uploading is nothing more than transferring data from your hard drive to a hard drive at the project. Reporting uses the database.

Reporting happens:
1) 24 hours before deadline
2) Connect Every X before deadline.
3) 24 hours after task completion.
4) Immediately if the upload completes later than either 1, 2, or 3 upon completion of the task.
5) On a trickle up message (CPDN only, I believe).
6) On a trickle down request.
7) On a server scheduled connection. Used, but I am not certain by which project.
8) On a request for new work.
9) When the user pushes the update button.
10) On a request from an account manager.

Please realise that the most important bit in Ageless' response is the first bit - particularly the word 'automatic'. When you first add a new machine to the project, it can easily happen that certain internal parameters within BOINC will need self-adjusting as BOINC gains experience with the performance of your host. So it's not unusual for BOINC to seem to be a bit lost at the very start.

By looking at your list of tasks on the website, I can see that the 4 completed tasks are now safely returned and you have some new ones to replace them. If you would like to see BOINC's automatic work handling in action, when you have some finished tasks, don't click on 'update' but rather just wait for BOINC to decide that it's time to get more work and report the completed tasks. BOINC always tries to combine these two into a single contact with the server.

You could make this happen immediately, if you wished, by deciding that you would like to hold extra tasks in reserve. Go to your account page on the website and find the computing preferences link. Now there is lots of stuff here that you will eventually want to tweak, but hasten slowly with that until you understand a bit more what it all means :-). In the Primary (default) preferences section, scroll down until you find the 'Network usage' sub-section and look at the very first two items there. This is what controls your cache of work. The best policy is usually to set a very low value for the first - or zero if always connected (I use 0.01 days) because this encourages BOINC to contact immediately when it needs to. Set the second value to what you really want to have as a cache. You need to protect against server outages so I would suggest perhaps a day or three, but don't go beserk :-). It really depends on how upset you would be if there was a server outage and you ran out of work :-).

If you are going to increase your cache of work, do it slowly. I think (from very distant memory) the default is 0.1 which is not enough for a reasonable cache. Change it to something like 0.5 and see what happens. Once you make a change on the website and save that change, if you want immediate action you have to click your local 'update' button to tell your BOINC client to contact the server. That's when the new preference value will get communicated to the client. Sit back and watch what happens. The end result will be more tasks on your machine.

You can make many of these preference changes locally but the advantage of doing it globally on the website is that if you decide to add extra machine(s), they will all get your chosen settings automatically.
