This is only showing up with new work units; but the problem (process creation failed, access denied) sounds like it's a problem on the local machine.

Is anyone else seeing this? Is there something I need to do on my end to address this, or is this a sit-tight-and-wait-for-an-application-bugfix error? Any feedback appreciated. Thanks in advance!

"Process Creation Failed: Access Denied (0x5)"

Hi!

I've seen that this can happen with certain virus and firewall software which is clever enough to detect that a certain program (BOINC) has downloaded an executable program (the science app) and is now trying to execute it.

Maybe your virus checker / firewall has a log that contains any hint to this?

Hmmm, I'll check the firewall logs when I get home from work. I run Comodo, which does ask for confirmation when one of the projects changes its applications, and BOINC tries to launch a program that hasn't run before. If that happened at 3 AM, it may have taken the lack of response from me as "refuse permission." (That's how it'd make sense to set up a firewall, at least--if you don't know what the program is and don't get confirmation it's OK, don't run it.)

Thanks for the clue. I'll check the logs tonight and see what I can find. I'll post an update here one way or the other.

Yes, my firewall was blocking

Yes, my firewall was blocking BOINC from starting the application. I've defined it as safe, so it should work now. Einstein won't send me any units because I've hit my daily quota, so I can't be sure until the 24 hours is up, but I *think* that should have fixed it. Thanks!

Thanks for reporting back on

Thanks for reporting back on the success of the fix.

Is this a popular firewall product? We might want to turn this issue into a FAQ entry or sticky thread.

Comodo may be less popular than Zone Alarm, but it's growing. I beta tested it (and other firewall solutions) with the development of BOINC from 5.5.x onwards, it always asked me what to do when I upgraded BOINC. It always would ask me about anything that tried to start or upgrade, which annoyed the heck out of me. And it would always block the start of programs until I told it it could continue, which was more annoying as I wasn't around the PC 24/7... That was one of the things I reported on at the time, they may have changed that behaviour for normal program starts.

Yet with a BOINC upgrade, you change the main program, so you have to re-allow it to function properly.

BTW, I did add the above error to my FAQs.

One of Comodo's options is to set safe files, so they're pre-approved. It allows selection of an entire folder, and inclusion of subfolders. I'm setting that option, so we'll see if that addresses the issue.

(I'm also getting the "No work available for the application you have selected, sending other application instead" messages... I can't tell from the discussion, is that potentially firewall-related, or is that a server-side issue? I haven't found any clear consensus or authoritative answer on that...)

Have you tried reading this sticky thread at the top of this message board? Since it was started by a Project Developer, it's pretty safe to assume it's authoritative.

There have also been other places where people have asked about this and the answers given point to a bug introduced at the time of the server software upgrade which will be fixed in due course. For the time being you can safely ignore these messages.

Cheers,
Gary.

I run Comodo and each time the app. from the project is upgraded, it will ask if it is okay to run the new app. even if you set up the project in trusted app's. Moving the downloaded files to "my safe files" has to be down each time the project upgrades
One other thing should be noted if you have defense+ enabled you may want to define the project (if possible) you are running as a trusted software vendor. Because Einstein does not appear to have a "valid signed executable" sig.(signer name in code signing certificate) it will not be possible for defense+ to include Einstein in the trusted software vendors. I am running Seti, Einstein, LHC and Cosmology of which none appear to have a signer name in code signing certificate. I don't know about the rest of the projects. The Boinc manager exe and Boinc exe. do have this sig so it will at least be possible for you to define Boinc (U of C,B) to be defined in the trusted software vendors.
