Visiting the BOINC download page using a 64 bit OS now results in you being offered a 64 bit client. That means Joe Public is going to be downloading these clients, and unless I've missed something in the 64 bit threads, isn't going to be able to attach to Einstein.
How close is the project to offering something to users connecting with 64 bit clients - either the 32 bit application or a native 64 bit application?

Be warned that that is a very early alpha version. There are tons of bugs still in it.
If you are going to run it, be prepared for problems. And please please please log problems to the alpha list or Trac. Both require sign up.
[edit]
In addition, I do believe that E@H must update their server code to today's HEAD for the 32 bit apps to be sent to a 64 bit host.
There was also a report on the alpha list of projects being reset because of a the platform change. Someone lost a 50% completed CPDN model (thankfully he restored from backup). However, David's checked in a fix for this problem to appear in the next alpha build.

It seems strange (to me) to offer an alpha client as the default download without any warning. I noticed the programme was labelled as "development version" on the all-versions page a couple of clicks away from the front page.
I don't intend to run it until the projects I like will cope with me using it.

It shouldn't be the default on the download page (/download.php) you should have to click through to get to the page with older and alpha versions (/download_all.php)
However, I just read over at Seti, those with 64 bit OSes were getting that on the main download page. Can you check for me and see if that's still the case. If it is, I'll email David and/or Rom to let them know.

I just checked the main SETI download page and was offered "5.9.9 for Windows x64" (I was offered v5.9.5 when I looked last Thursday).
It's still listed as a "development version" on the all versions download page.

It's very much still in development. I emailed David and Rom about it. We'll see what they have to say.

5.9.4 couldn't even install on my Win Xp Pro x64...
Have they at least fixed that problem?
Oh, Yeah, and how do you install it over the 5.8.15, x86 version?
(currently running [when I'm booted into x64...) CPDN...)
RE: 5.9.4 couldn't even

The install problem is fixed. You can just install it over the old version like any other upgrade, however it may reset all projects due to the platform change. The current version has attempts to allow previous tasks to continue working rather than resetting all projects. I do not recommend trying it without a backup if you are running CPDN.
edit: E@H does not have a 64bit win application yet, nor has the server been updated.
