maybe I am slow on the uptake, but I have just noticed an obvious side effect of the way credits are calculated now.

Credit pending is no longer an estimate but the real number (apart from the rare case where a result is rejected).

This means I can work out my current "virtual" credit by adding the pending figure to my total credit.

You can do the same thing for all projects where the credits of WUs were pre-assigned on the server side, eg: Einstein@home, SETI@home, CPDN...

S@h credits aren’t pre-assigned, although claims are usually very consistent now. The exceptions are from older BOINC clients that can’t report the app’s claims, using time & benchmarks instead; if you get grouped with a couple of them in a quorum (which admittedly doesn’t happen very often) your grant will still be something of a crap-shoot.
