My Samsung Galaxy S9 cell phone won't complete any E@H tasks

My cell phone has been downloading the E@H tasks, to my knowledge all Binary Radio Pulsar Search (Arecibo) v1.46 tasks.  I have a total of 263 tasks, of which 255 have not timed out yet, but no, none, zero, zipp... have been completed.  The fact that I went into my settings in the phone, and made changes to E@H like lowering the % of battery power to allow it to work more often, and when I'm at home I leave it on the charging station anyway.  It rarely gets below 80% on the battery, yet the battery (backside of the phone case) feels warm even when on the charging station or in my pocket doing nothing.  The 8 tasks unaccounted for show an error due to being "timed out", and my next group of tasks will time out Aug 1st.

Am I missing something?  Am I doing something wrong?  When I had originally downloaded BOINC and began doing tasks, it did show SOME exercise but it was REAL slow, after a week it had done about 3% - 5% work.  So I deleted the program and reloaded it and set it up again.  To date, it has done nothing.  It will download more files when I want it to, but the work shown is zero, and my phone says to shut off the display to allow it to continue working.

I do recall some forum topic here a while back that indicated E@H on an Android phone was stopping, doing nothing.  The moderator new of the problem and I believe that it was fixed, or so I thought it was fixed.  Is that still the case?

What does the Manager show

What does the Manager show for any progress on the running tasks?  Is the counter incrementing?  Do you show anything in task properties about progress or ram usage?

I had sent an email to Oliver

I had sent an email to Oliver Behnke to query about this very thing.  Here is his response that I received today (08/03/2020) and my reply.

Hi George,

first and foremost: thanks for supporting us! Now, your Android and BOINC client version look ok, yet I'm curious about the BOINC client version reported. Are you using an unofficial or beta version of BOINC? The current official release is still at 7.4.53, not 7.16.3 like you've got installed.

Anyhow, in principle things should work from our perspective. The "hiatus" root cause was related to contacting our server securely (SSL/TLS) but that does work for all devices mentioned in the first post of that topic - and the very fact that you've got 263 tasks downloaded verifies that for your case. FYI, you can see the last client/server communication log by clicking on that highlighted timestamp in your screenshot.

As to why your tasks aren't running, we can't directly investigate things at our end since that's not reported to us. However, the BOINC client comes with a number of debug logging settings you can enable. While not focusing on the Android-specific settings, this overview should give you an idea and I think the ones you can find in the Android client will be recognizable in that list. Enhanced logging might give a clue what's going on.

A general note: Android 10 makes it really difficult for BOINC to keep running in the background, at least for the current stable release. The upcoming release (which you might already be using as beta version) will try to mitigate those effects but might not be 100% effective either, unfortunately.

Hope this helps,
Oliver

Thank you Oliver for getting back to me.

I was hoping for better news, but the way you explained it, I can understand why I am having trouble running BOINC on my Samsung Galaxy S9 with Android 10.  The 7.4.53 release is described as an older version, and does not run and does not connect to BOINC (at least for Einstein).

I will wait for the upcoming release and hope the problems I have will be mitigated.

Regards,

George

I hope this gives others with Android phones like mine with an Android 10 operating system why their phones aren't working either.

Hi Oliver,

Would the reason my cell phone doesn't do any work be because of this thread?

https://einsteinathome.org/content/android-support-hiatus-official-boinc-app-only

I posted a different thread in E@H > Forums > Cruncher's Corner:

https://einsteinathome.org/content/my-samsung-galaxy-s9-cell-phone-wont-complete-any-eh-tasks

I would like to get my phone to do work if I can.  I don't use it often so I might as well make use of it,

Cheers,

George
