As long as the hardware and OS are the same you should be good to go... unless something has changed recently.

I agree. However, I have machines with identical CPU descriptions and OS descriptions (per E@H), yet cannot merge. This is not unique to E@H. Many older server applications have is this same problem. The latest BOINC server is much better with this issue.
Hey, have the same problem. The reason is, that the CPU Identification is now more detailed than in earlier BOINC version and the server can't handle the difference except the latest version which is not yet installed in various projects.
